Touchscreen display

A touchscreen interface makes it easier to use features like X-Ray, Goodreads, built-in dictionary, highlighting, and more. And with a glare-free screen that looks like real paper, you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room

Easy on the eyes

Every time your eyes switch from a bright screen to a dimmer, ambient room, your eyes have to adjust, which may result in fatigue. With Kindle, the page is the same brightness as everything else in the room, so there’s no adjustment needed.

Weeks-long battery life

Kindle does not require power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for weeks on a single charge.

Lighter than a paperback

Kindle is lighter than most paperback books, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand for extended periods of time.

Reads like the printed page

Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp text similar to what you see in a physical book. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving text and image quality.

Can't go wrong for the price, but that said you might consider a different e-reader as well. After using it for a month I'm going to cover all of the negatives I've noticed.
Glare-free is a lie, it looks like medium to high-gloss paper so you still have to position yourself properly when near a light source.
The battery does not last as long as they claim, it still lasts easily two weeks, but if you're a voracious reader you will be having to charge it relatively often.
The kindle is light almost to a fault, if you grip it the sides squeak as the plastic case components rub against each other, making it feel pretty flimsy.
Finally, it does not read EPUB format, and while there are many free programs out there to convert from EPUB to mobi, it gets annoying.

All in all it's still fine, a lot of these negatives can be easily overlooked and I do really like it, but I also never looked into other e-readers so that may be worthwhile

I have been converted. I was once the girl that said, "I will never use an e-Reader. I like the feel of books too much." I have now seen the light. I absolutely love my Kindle.

It was on sale, so I decided to see what the fuss was about. I was also getting fed up of trying to find places to put my book collection. They were just taking up so much space, I thought that an ereader might help prevent this clutter. Also, the books for Kindle generally tend to be at least a little bit cheaper than the hard copies. I also have a few books that I wanted to read that were longer, but I didn't want to lug around a 20 pound book. So, I gave it a whirl. Very, very happy I did.

I have 50 books on my Kindle. You can read what you feel like reading in the moment. It's lightweight. You can adjust the fonts to larger or smaller sizes. You can shop online for more books with it.

The negative -- It's frozen on me once in the few months I've had it, which was a fear of mine with these ereaders. I followed Amazon's instructions to unfreeze it and it was fine. Hasn't happened since. The biggest knock against it for me, is that it's not backlit so you can read in the dark. I just bought a little book light and it's great. I believe the paperwhite is backlit, so that is an option if you want that feature. I just found with the paperwhite, there were too many features I wouldn't ever use. This basic one fits my needs perfectly.

Really very happy with the purchase.

It took a bit of time, but now that I know how to use it, I love the Kindle and actually prefer reading books on the Kindle as opposed to the old-style printed books. As an added bonus, the Kindle stores thousands of books and I don't have to find space around the house to store hard-copy, printed books. They are all stored in one small device!

I don't know why I waited so long to get this. I previously had a KOBO Touch and thought all e-readers lagged when you turned the pages and when you typed something in to search for a book. I also thought they were not capable of keeping track of where you were reading when moving between devices such as the reader and the phone app. Well the Kindle has solved all that. I can move between devices seamlessly, when I type in a search I do not have to allow a couple of seconds for the letter to show up before I can type the next letter and page turning is great. This e-reader is so responsive. I was worried about the slightly small screen but I have found that it is not an issue. I would buy this again in a heartbeat.

I resisted the e-books for a long time... But this is so nice. Other than the usual downfalls of electronic vs real book, this is a fabulous device. The screen is great, and even the lower resolution is perfect for regular reading. Interface is nice too, intuitive and user friendly. Very easy to load books and PDFs.

Much quicker wifi, search and page turn than my kobo was, works great, but I hate the on off button being on the bottom, it's always getting bumped off when I lean it against something...perhaps should have been a slide not a toggle button? Also the Kindle itself feels like cheap plastic, lots of the other eReader lines have used a soft touch plastic that's a lot more pleasant to the touch, and gives you a better grip.

If you only like kindle books this is a good choice. eINK is awesome. However it doesn't open ePUB books. Most libraries only offer ePUB so this is a very serious shortcoming.
I ordered this for my daughter for Christmas and was very disappointed. She is a voracious reader and can't afford the $100/month this thing would cost her in content charges. Kindle should open up to all formats or else be very very clear on the product description. Thanks for reading. I hope this helps someone.

I was wanting another old version with the buttons but this touch screen is very fast and of course much easier to type on ! I think this works better than my previous Kobo touch with backlight ! Much more sensitive touch and different way of accessing content but getting used to it . Fun to use ! Love it !
