Over the past ten years, I've owned a Sony PRS-300 (stopped working two months ago), Sony PRS-600 (still working, albeit with a mostly-shot battery), Sony PRS-T2 (still going strong), Kindle Paperwhite 2 (exchanged twice to get one with a good screen; still going strong), and Kindle Paperwhite 3 (for my son--no issues except splotchy screen, which doesn't matter to my son). A few months ago I ordered a Kindle Voyage, but returned both (original order & replacement order) due to significant screen issues.
To be honest, when I ordered the Kindle Oasis, I half-expected to ship it back upon arrival. (I carefully cut into the package and even turned it on with the plastic wrap still on, as it's been my experience that getting Kindles back into that plastic is time-consuming.) There were a few issues that were immediately apparent: the Oasis starts with full LED brightness, and immediately the LEDs were visible, along with resultant shadowing. This is at full brightness, however, and as I don't ever use it at full brightness, I wasn't immediately concerned. I dropped it down to 15, and they weren't visible.
Screen is very uniform, more so than the Kindle Paperwhite 2 that's been my benchmark since it was released. No visible problems like with the Kindle Voyage (see my review on that store page for a picture), even though some have reported that the Oasis has similar issues.Read more ›
I love the physical page turn buttons. I think they are necessary for Canadian winters, if you wait for public transit outdoors like me. I like how the screen and the page turn button orientation automatically switch over when the ereader is turned around.
The battery has been lasting a long time so far, in combination with the battery in the cover. The Oasis is connected strongly to the cover with magnets, but it is easily detached for "naked" ereader reading. With my previous kindles, it was an effort to remove the ereader from its cover, so I wouldn't bother. I can see myself reading with the Oasis most often without the cover.
Whether it's worth the high cost is up to the individual. I wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on shoes, purses, or other things that many people collect, but I love to read, I don't mind spending on good technology, and this is the best ereader I've come across. I'm totally satisfied with my purchase, even with the 3G added (which I haven't had since the kindle keyboard, and I've missed having). Almost all of my previous kindles are still working, so I don't doubt this one will last me years as well.

Rediculous high price. I have had mine only one day, but so far very disappointed. Don't find it very comfortable to hold, prefer my old one. Read morePublished 2 days ago by Carol Pernarowski

My kindle oasis's battery keeps draining too fast. The battery life did not last for months as the advertisement stated. I wish I could have just kept my kindle paper white. Read morePublished 20 days ago by Eugene Yan

I love the Kindle Oasis!!!!! This tool is so much better than any other device I own. I did not like reading on my IPad; it was too heavy and the lighting did not work for me. Read morePublished 27 days ago by susan close
