Unlike any kindle

Reimagined to be our thinnest''

New—Designed to feel as light as paper, Kindle Oasis is over 20% lighter and 30% thinner on average than any other Kindle. The handgrip tapers to an ultrathin 3.4 mm display so you can read comfortably for hours.

New—Kindle Oasis combines our strongest cover glass and a featherweight frame infused with metal using structural electroplating, ensuring it is lightweight while also resilient enough to take anywhere you want to read.

Perfectly Balanced''

New—A tapered ergonomic handgrip shifts the center of gravity to your palm, to rest in your hand like the spine of a book. Perfectly balanced for one-handed reading, Kindle Oasis enables you to get lost in your story.

New—Comfortably turn the page with either the touch display or dedicated page turn buttons located on the front of the handgrip. Whether you choose to read with your left or right hand, Kindle Oasis automatically rotates the page orientation to match.

Highest resolution Kindle with enhanced lighting

Kindle Oasis features a high-resolution 300 ppi display for crisp, laser-quality text—all on the same 6” display size as Kindle Voyage. A redesigned built-in light features 60% more LEDs than any other Kindle, increasing the consistency and range of screen brightness for improved reading in all types of lighting. Kindle Oasis guides light toward the surface of the display with its built-in front light—unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes—so you can read comfortably for hours without eyestrain.

Dual-battery charging system delivers months of battery life—our longest ever

New—Charge the device and cover simultaneously while snapped together and plugged in. When on the go, the cover will automatically recharge the device, giving you months of combined battery life. Plus, a new hibernation mode minimizes power consumption when your Kindle is inactive, extending battery life to its fullest capacity.

Premium leather cover

New—The removable charging cover is made of high-quality black leather. The cover opens like a book and fits closely around the bezel, waking Kindle Oasis when opened and putting it to sleep when closed. Twelve magnets form a secure attachment between device and cover, while still easy to detach when the lightest possible weight is desired.

I deducted one star for the ridiculous price - but have to admit it is an incredibly comfortable design. I enjoyed the Paperwhite and the Voyage, but in terms of reading experience, this thing tops them both easily. It is a matter of individual choice whether the difference is sufficient to justify the price. On another note, I have seen comments here and there to the effect that the battery life isn't what it should be. As an avid reader, I find the battery life sufficient for my needs. Let's get something straight: Amazon's method of evaluating battery life has little bearing on real-world use by someone who would actually spend the money for this. No Kindle lasts for weeks on a charge unless it spends a LOT of time on the shelf gathering dust. Overall, a quality purchase - but the price makes it iffy. There is nothing wrong with the Paperwhite or the Voyage ... both of those are perfectly satisfactory Kindles, you decide whether you can afford this.

I debated for two days which e-reader to purchase. Kobo was out due to the numerous negative reviews about their device reliability. Many of their ebooks are more expensive, and even with the price-match guarantee, it is still so much easier to purchase it from the Kindle store. I don't tend to borrow library books, so that wasn't a concern for me. Kindle devices had mostly positive reviews, the ability to sync to GoodReads, and to sync with NetGalley. Then came the choice between which Kindle device to get - not an easy choice! I was leaning towards the Kindle Paperwhite due to the affordable price, but my eye kept creeping over to the Kindle Oasis - a thing of beauty and like no other e-reader on the market! But the price, oh the price! In the end I chose the Oasis because I love reading and want the most comfortable, light, and reliable device to read on. After receiving the Oasis in the mail, I am completely confident I made the right choice. The device is so small, light, and comfortable to use. Considering how much I read, this is a good investment for me. If you can find it in your budget, I strongly recommend taking the plunge and buying the Oasis. Side Note: I like it so much that I ended up selling my iPad Mini to help offset the cost of this device. With owning a phablet and computer, I find myself doing very little but reading on my iPad Mini. And in reality, it isn't the most comfortable device to read on due to the LCD screen and weight to read on. Also, when I read I want to unplug from all the distractions of the day (emails, Facebook, etc). Having it on the device I am reading on is distracting.

So: the $399 Kindle Oasis. The first thing to discuss is the price: with the current exchange rate, we're paying more than our American counterparts. If it weren't for the many problems I've had with Kindles in the past (more on that later), I would have had it shipped to a US post office box.

Over the past ten years, I've owned a Sony PRS-300 (stopped working two months ago), Sony PRS-600 (still working, albeit with a mostly-shot battery), Sony PRS-T2 (still going strong), Kindle Paperwhite 2 (exchanged twice to get one with a good screen; still going strong), and Kindle Paperwhite 3 (for my son--no issues except splotchy screen, which doesn't matter to my son). A few months ago I ordered a Kindle Voyage, but returned both (original order & replacement order) due to significant screen issues.

To be honest, when I ordered the Kindle Oasis, I half-expected to ship it back upon arrival. (I carefully cut into the package and even turned it on with the plastic wrap still on, as it's been my experience that getting Kindles back into that plastic is time-consuming.) There were a few issues that were immediately apparent: the Oasis starts with full LED brightness, and immediately the LEDs were visible, along with resultant shadowing. This is at full brightness, however, and as I don't ever use it at full brightness, I wasn't immediately concerned. I dropped it down to 15, and they weren't visible.

Screen is very uniform, more so than the Kindle Paperwhite 2 that's been my benchmark since it was released. No visible problems like with the Kindle Voyage (see my review on that store page for a picture), even though some have reported that the Oasis has similar issues.

I've had every kind of kindle since they were first released, and this is the best one so far. It's smaller than the Voyage, but has the same screen size. The extra LED lights make the screen nice and bright compared to the same lighting level as the Voyage. They have a fantastic new font, Amazon Ember, which is so easy to read that I was able to go one font size smaller without needing my reading glasses.

I love the physical page turn buttons. I think they are necessary for Canadian winters, if you wait for public transit outdoors like me. I like how the screen and the page turn button orientation automatically switch over when the ereader is turned around.

The battery has been lasting a long time so far, in combination with the battery in the cover. The Oasis is connected strongly to the cover with magnets, but it is easily detached for "naked" ereader reading. With my previous kindles, it was an effort to remove the ereader from its cover, so I wouldn't bother. I can see myself reading with the Oasis most often without the cover.

Whether it's worth the high cost is up to the individual. I wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on shoes, purses, or other things that many people collect, but I love to read, I don't mind spending on good technology, and this is the best ereader I've come across. I'm totally satisfied with my purchase, even with the 3G added (which I haven't had since the kindle keyboard, and I've missed having). Almost all of my previous kindles are still working, so I don't doubt this one will last me years as well.
