I've owned my Kindle for a couple of years and really like it. It's a space saver, it's fantastically legible, offers fingertip access to a dictionary, the ability to buy and receive books in seconds, etc. It's great!
However, I just bought two Kobo e-readers for my kids because Kindle still does not support EPUB books from Canadian libraries and Kobo does. I got tired of waiting and thought you, and others, should know.
Right from the first day, I have used a case with this Paperwhite, the original KleverCase. Why? Because I find that Paperwhite is very small and there isn't much room for actually holding onto the thing, thus my thumbs easily accidentally brush the touch-screen flipping pages, happens even with the case. [FYI I do not like the new KleverCase as the original looked like a real book; from the side it looked like there were paper pages in between the front and back cover, this is no longer true.]. This is my biggest pet peeve with the paperwhite, is that it's very easy to accidentally touch the screen and flip pages. You can't read a book normally allowing your thumbs to sit anywhere comfortable. In fact, you only need to move your finger close to the screen and it can detect your finger without actually touching it, and it can flip pages very quickly, so in one second you've flipped a half dozen pages and trying to go back and find the page you were on is a pain. Hopefully, they've fixed this in newer versions, although I haven't heard anything; I don't think they have. Not only do I accidentally flip pages, I accidentally do highlights of words, sentences, and paragraphs. Super annoying, but since I only read at home while laying down, it's okay, but if I was trying to read while commuting on the bus, for example, wow that would be really bothersome. Even after 5 years of daily use, I am still finding myself cursing at just highlighting random things on a page.
The next thing that needs improvement is the backlight. The backlight is always ON. You cannot turn it off. Yes, you can turn the brightness down to 1, but not to 0 i.e. off. So, the backlight can eat into your battery usage.
I love the fact that you can use wifi to touch on a word and it will immediately look it up so whenever an author throws in an obscure word or historical figure, you can find out that they are referring to a little-known artist from the 1700s, how nice! So annoying when authors do that.
What I don't love is that it uses the battery when I'm not even reading! What is it doing? I don't know. Connecting to WiFi doing something, I guess. When I put it to sleep, I want it 100% off, not doing stuff in the background using my wifi and battery.
The best thing about the paperwhite is the e-paper! Its really great! Just like reading on paper! You really can read in full sunshine -- in fact, the brighter it is, the easier it is to read, just like with anything written on paper. Really cool.
There really should be a button to turn the touchscreen on and off, so you can place your hands anywhere on the screen without causing havoc while reading. They say that it's small enough to read while holding it with one hand, but that's a lie, because in reality you have to hold it at the edges; holding it with one hand is so very awkward and uncomfortable that you'd get a cramped hand. In the official photo I've attached, you can see that the person not only has their fingers in a very awkward position in order to avoid touching the screen, they also have it propped up against their leg at the same time because that really the only way to do it one-handed. The older versions that had buttons for changing pages where so much better in this regard. I know people who still use the one with buttons because of this. Rightly so.

Every other page turn it seems the screen flashes from white background and black font to a quick yet very annoying flash of black background to white font. Why it does this only on some page turns is beyond me. it also does it when opening the menu or dictionary etc. If it's capable of normal non flashing page turns sometimes, you would think after this many generations of kindles and e-readers they'd have this resolved by now. I've used the kindle app on my android phone and tablet and this has never happened. EVER. However, using the app and reading on these devices drains the battery extremely fast. Which is why I considered purchasing the Kindle Paperwhite.
I am also disappointed that Amazon wants to charge you an extra $20 for the power adapter portion. They only give you the USB cord to charge. While this isn't a huge issue because it fits into any other USB power adapter it just seems a little silly they would want to charge so much for it when comparable products are easily available on eBay. Fortunately I have enough of them kicking around that it wasn't a huge issue. Just kind of seems silly to not include it and the description of the product was difficult to see what was included when using the amazon app to purchase. I had to log into the site from my laptop to get the full details.
Now for my good things to say about it are the battery life is pretty fantastic. I read a lot and when I say a lot I mean A LOT. Average a book a day or two if they're short. And this kindle lasted for just over a week with constant use. My cell phone or tablet would have needed to be plugged in and charged at least twice in one day for that much reading.
I love the display aside from the screen flashing issue. It really does look like you're reading from a book. Reading in the sun, no problem! Reading in the dark, no problem! Although, after using my phone or tablet I am a little disappointed the book covers are black and white instead of color.
It's lightweight and easy to hold. this might not be important to other people but since I have difficulty holding things with weight in my one arm due to an injury. This is light enough that I am able to switch hands if I need to.
Even though there is a lot of good things about this product I'm not sure if I can get past the irritating screen flashes. I am considering returning this product after speaking with Amazon about this issue. But since I have 30 days to return they asked if I would give it a trial run for a week or so. Even after a week I'm still annoyed with the flashing but since I have used the amazon app for quite some time now I have purchased a lot of books already that would not be compatible on other e-reader devices. So I'm in a bit of a pickle about what to do.
