KitchenAid® 7-Speed Ultra Power® Hand Mixer Features our Clean Touch™ Digital Control Pad and electronic mixing sensor, this versatile, powerful mixer is perfect for every kitchen.
Pound for pound, a good hand mixer is perhaps the most laborsaving kitchen device. While my grandmother relied on arm strength and force of will to beat a stiff dough or to mash potatoes, a light and easily maneuvered hand mixer saves time and muscles. This one from KitchenAid features seven-speed digital touch control for precision mixing, and an electronic sensor that will adjust the power as you go, so you maintain a steady mixing speed. If you're beating a delicate batter, you can use the Soft Start feature and ease into faster speed. When you're finished, the beaters are easily ejected. If you've ever battled heavy doughs, you'll appreciate the beaters' design: they don't have a center post, so dough won't collect in the middle of the beater and clog the machine. It's also designed for easy cleaning. --Laura Cuthbert

If you're looking for a good mixer with dough hooks, as I was (mmmmmm... home-made bread!), you should be aware of this fact. Perhaps this explains the price difference I mentioned above, but I'm not sure if the ones in stores include the attachments. My advice: check the outside of the box carefully if you find one in-store; my box does not mention dough hooks. Maybe even open it?
Otherwise, having now used the mixer to make whipped cream, cookie dough and pancake batter (nothing too demanding), I can say that it is a good product. Very quiet and well designed.
--- Update ---
I've been waiting 2 weeks for the dough hooks from Whirpool, who are the suppliers for KitchenAid parts in Canada. I called today for an update, since they said that it would take 10 business days (2 weeks), and was told by the local parts dealer that Whirlpool "wasn't giving him a good ETA (estimated time of arrival)" so it might take another 2 weeks. If you want this mixer (which, in itself, is really good!), beware that parts supply is pretty terrible, at least in Canada.Read more ›

The only limitation of the KA handhelds is that their maximum speed is on the slow side. Whipped cream and egg whites don't build up as fast or firmly as you sometimes need (it is hard to get firm, dry peaks in egg whites like for meringue).
While I have the 5qt KA stand mixer (and love it!), I was disappointed in the slowness of the hand mixer. Until I got the wire whisk attachment (about 16$ from appliance parts supplier). This made all the difference. I can now whip a half pint of cream and 2 egg whites in under a minute!
Do yourself a favor: save money by buying the 5 speed model and spend only about half of the money you saved on the wire (balloon) whisk attachment. You'll get better performance for less money.
I gave this (and it's twin models) 4 stars. It would be a 5 if the whisk attachment (which is needed) were included.
