There are many automatic kettles in the $100 range from Breville, Cuisinart, Kitchenaid, etc... The one advantage this kettle has over all others is the ability to do 122'F water whereas all others are in the 170'F+ range. This is the perfect temperature for yeast when making breads. If you're a baker this is fantastic. No more trying to get the right temperature with a thermometer. Set it and forget it.
So far I love the kettle. I've verified the temperatures with a calibrated thermometer and they are accurate. I've only had the kettle for about a month, so the long term durability has not been tested. I use the kettle daily, sometimes 4 or more times per day. I've made breads with it and fell in love with the 122'F feature.
If you're worried about quality, Kitchenaid has a pro line kettle that is around $175 or so.
5 stars for initial quality, and will be downgraded if after a year the kettle hasn't held up.
i would recommend it!
I have the red one. It's a really nice red. You put the kettle on your counter, and suddenly your kitchen looks like it's out of a catalogue. No joke, this is a fine looking appliance. You can see where the water level is really easily, the handle feels good in the hand, and the spout doesn't slop water all over the place. It pours where you want it to pour. Maybe it should go without saying, but hey, I think we've all had cheap kettles before.
It beeps a lot. Other people have mentioned this, and I didn't believe them. You'll probably dismiss this part of my review as well, but seriously, it beeps. A lot. All the time. Loudly. Whoever designed this part of the kettle was bad at their job. Perhaps it was a student. The beep is a harsh, grating noise. I've come up with little tricks to make it beep less, like pressing the temperature selector at the same time I put the kettle in its base, because the temperature select sound is shorter. I also hover near the kettle when I'm paying attention so I can pull it off the base just before it finishes and beeps THREE TIMES to let me know that the water is done.
Does it heat water? It sure does! It makes quick work of getting to 100C.
But it sort of breaks down from here.
The kettle is a single-wall design. It retains heat not at all. Miss the kettle finishing by a few minutes and you may as well start it again--the water won't be the temperature you were aiming for. In fact, it's a bit questionable that it hits the temperature you were aiming for on the first try at all.
See, the kettle has this feature that you can put 2AA batteries in it so you can check the temperature whenever you want.Read more ›
I like the visual design of it, It has an interesting retro-future aesthetic with it's sharp angled handle and canister shaped body, all in stainless steel and black. It could be off the set of a cheesy 60's sci-fi movie about Alien Housewives.
As another reviewer stated though, the number of times it beeps is a little excessive. It's not terribly loud or intrusive but it sounds like a garbage truck backing up about half a block away.
