"Hellman's book is thorough, fully documented, readable ... It is surely the best study of the École des Cadres that exists, marked by sure knowledge and an excellent propensity for quoting illuminating pieces of evidence to illustrate the propositions being made ... His study is a significant contribution in the field of contemporary French history." John C. Cairns, Department of History, University of Toronto.

This is a great work and gives great insights ideological framework in which Petainism belongs.

All of John Hellman's works also provide valuable information on the development of the Catholic philosophy of personalism which is a central intellectual pillar of the papacies of John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

This book in particular provides concrete evidence of the malleable nature of personalism and its acceptance by the intellectual proponents of the french variant of a kind of left wing fascism in the early days of Vichy
