2012 release from the British power trio. It's been nearly five years since Little Barrie has released new material, but King of the Waves definitively proves that it's been absolutely worth the wait. Since 2007, the band has dedicated themselves to honing their musical reputations, doing everything from appearing live with Primal Scream to collaborations with the likes of Morrissey and Mark Ronson. Guitarist/frontman Barrie Cadogan and bassist/vocalist Lewis Wharton are joined on the album by the new addition of drummer/vocalist Virgil Howe, son of renowned Yes guitarist Steve Howe. The resulting sound produced by the band is as intensely electrifying as one might expect from such a dynamic and in-demand group of individuals. It calls to mind an old school Detroit rock 'n' roll showdown between Link Wray and The Creation, with the MC5 and Motown's best in attendance to cheer both sides, and the omnipresent threat of a killer wave lurking just overhead.

Barrie Cadogan (guitar, vocals, and chief songwriter) is Little Barrie's guiding light. A creative and accomplished guitarist on both the heavy jam and the melodic riff, his vocals are also great -- in that snarly, slightly nasal rasp that perfectly signifies classic Brit rock 'n' roll. The other band members (Lewis Wharton on bass and Virgil Howe on drums) also shine on their instruments, helping create the band's fabulous sonic swirls of sound and melody -- and of course keeping the beat front, center, and irresistible.
Standout tracks include "Surf Hell" (I defy you to keep your seat), "Tip It Over," (unbelievable live!) and "King of the Waves," which has a compelling psychedelic tinge a la Brian Jonestown Massacre.
This record has been out for 3 years already -- and a new one, "Shadow," is due out in late May 2014.
Also of interest: Barrie Cadogan also tours as lead guitarist with Primal Scream (since 2006); Virgil Howe is son of Yes's guitarist, Steve Howe.
