This text has a great layout. The chapters are short and succinct. I would definitely recomment getting the workbook along with this text.

HASH(0xa0a80fc8) out of 5 stars Good text for learning Greek along with the Workbook May 29 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I recommend this New Testament Greek textbook, provided it is used along with the Workbook. However, I have not yet determined whether the workbook is still in print!

HASH(0xa0a86e04) out of 5 stars Very effective approach but ... Jan. 18 2002
By I Rembach - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The method of teaching in this book is excellent as it does not swamp the student with details that are not needed at an early stage. At the same time the book is very thorough in it's coverage of grammar as details are presented later, when needed. However every student needs exercises which this book doesn't contain. In the introduction to the book a "Workbook" is mentioned but I cannot find this anywhere on the internet.

HASH(0xa0a86f90) out of 5 stars An excellent text with a workbook Sept. 12 2003
By Martha Jones - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This was the text I used to learn New Testament Greek many years ago, and I have not seen the likes of it for its clarity. For so many other Greek textbooks, the saying applies, "One cannot see the forest for the trees." The need for a workbook has been pointed out by other reviewers, and yes I did find a workbook on the publisher's site that is in print and readily available.

HASH(0xa0a7fbf4) out of 5 stars A decent introduction to Greek Aug. 13 2013
By Doug Erlandson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
In the Preface to "The Language of the New Testament" the author writes about his text as follows: "It is intended to be used n a one-semester course (three hours a week, preferably with an additional optional hour for less able students)." Given that this book also attempts to introduce many of the details of Greek grammar and to do a thorough job of it, I believe this is unduly optimistic.

Having said that, I will list its strong points: It is clearly laid out. It covers the basics of Greek grammar adequately. And it provides examples (mostly from the NT itself) of the use of the various parts of speech and constructions. A student studying and internalizing the entire book should be able to begin fairly serious exegesis of the NT Greek text. In this it fulfills its promise (also found in the Preface): "Students who have successfully completed this course have been able to proceed to introductory courses in New Testament exegesis in which the Greek text is used as the basis for study." It's just that (as I've already said) I'm not sure that this is easily doable in a single semester.

Now to the weak points: (1) There are no exercises in this text. There is supposedly a workbook around, but it doesn't appear to be readily available. A teacher thinking of adopting this text for his or her class may want to be prepared to construct exercises for the student. (2) The price of the book is on the high end. Both Machen and Moule are as good (though they take a different approach) and are available at a lower cost.
HASH(0xa0bd1af8) out of 5 stars This is the best introductory NT Greek text I know of Feb. 26 2015
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is the best introductory NT Greek text I know of, though I have not taught Greek now for many years and don't know what is currently available. I don't think many persons will pay $104 for it! It does need the accompanying workbook. When I first took Greek we plowed through Machen, memorizing paradigm after paradigm -- coming back from summer break having forgotten most all it. Then I reviewed with Goetchius and found it so different & so much better, as Goetchius shows much more linguistic understanding & teaches the morphology in a much more coherent approach. However, after learning the fine systematized grammar of Goetchius I went to a university and took classical Greek, actually a different language. The nice systematization of the paradigms of koine Greek in Goetchius, are hardly sufficient to handle classical Greek.
