I Can't Make This Up

Product description

Product Description

Last Shot is the SIXTH offbeat (and very funny) mystery in the Dev Haskell Private Investigator series.

Dysfunctional PI Dev Haskell receives a request from beautiful, red-headed Desi Quinn to investigate the trumped-up charges that ruined her life and sent her to prison six years ago. Desi's life was destroyed after a brief relationship with upstanding citizen, Man-of-the-Year Gaston Driscoll, who just happened to be her boss. She views Dev as her last hope--her last shot--but the impossibly dangerous scenario she describes makes Dev think the investigation would be out of his league; he politely declines.

As Desi's story slowly unravels, Dev realizes (under a mountain of guilt) that he made a huge mistake. He embarks on a mission to make things right, only to become a killer's next target. An entertaining tale of intrigue, rank ineptitude, and raucously entertaining one night stands, Last Shot is another funny, fast paced, engrossing thriller from Minnesota’s master of the bizarre.

About the Author

Mike Faricy writes the sort of crime fiction we can all relate to. In Faricy's work, no one is going to save the world from fanatical terrorists, government coups or international bank conspiracies. Rather, his tales are populated with the sorts of individuals we all know, but wisely keep at a distance. The situations they find themselves in are due to their own bad decisions, but then bad decisions make for interesting tales. MIke Faricy divides his time between St. Paul, Minnesota and Dublin, Ireland which makes him the most boring guy in two towns. He is currently working on his latest top secret crime fiction project.

I wasn't particularly impressed with this book. While the humour was okay, the story line was pretty feeble and thin. The hero has no apparent source of backup funds but always has cash. He's given unsupervised access to confidential police files continuously based on a friendship with a cop and comes and goes as he pleases a little to easily at all times. As I already mentioned, this book is just too thin, takes a simple story and works hard to stretch it out to some 281 pages. I'd not read a book before that wasted so much type describing clothing, apartments, bars, cars, furniture, and etcetera, etcetera. I guess anything to add length to a thin story line.
I get the impression, though, that the author has a good following. At least by the number of books he's written. However, I won't be joining the pack.

Devlin "Dev" Haskell, is a Private Investigator, although not a very busy one.
He's not very ambitious. He likes to drink his Leinenkugel beer, visit seedy establishments, has some questionable friends, and likes any woman that will pay him a little attention. You'll think he's lazy and a deadbeat but with every book, he grows on you a little more and you can't help but like him!

Desi Quinn paid for a crime she said she didn't commit. She wanted to hire Dev to prove she was set up but he turned her down. When she later turns up dead, Dev is motivated by guilt to honor her memory and prove her innocence.

In typical Dev fashion, he finds himself in more trouble. His unorthodox way of searching for the truth will have you shaking your head and wondering if he's really good at his job or just has a death wish! This was a fast-paced, quick read with mystery and suspense.
