It doesn't make the phone too large that it doesn't fit in many of the newer cradles or docks that are designed to fit the S3, S4, and Note 2, but it does lift the phone slightly so that when you place it face down on a flat surface, the glass doesn't touch.
It's a simple case, but very reasonably priced, especially considering the excellent fit and typically good quality control you can expect from a Samsung part (IE - chances are your case will fit well, too). Does it protect the phone from 5 foot drops? I don't know - it's had a couple since we bought the case, and the screen hasn't shattered, but maybe we got lucky. Or maybe the screen protector helped. It has to help some - there is no question - but it isn't a Otter Box Megatron 5000 Combat Defender Rock Climber Edition type case. (Yup, that was a good hearted little jab to those out there with spacesuits, roll cages, and musem cases around your phones.)
We were unlucky previously without a case and screen protector and ended up getting a replacement phone, but honestly, the latest Samsung Galaxy phones (Note 2, S3, and S4) are difficult to hold securely without a case anyway, so just buy it and your chances of it slipping out of your hand and getting dropped in the first place will decrease significantly.
I had seen other people saying that it doesn't flip into the viewing position properly, but you have to take some things into consideration. When the case is new, it's a bit stiff, so the seams need to be flexed a bit before it will stand upright easily. Mine stays in the viewing position pretty well right now and I just got it this afternoon.
The quality of materials used is pretty nice...again especially for the price. The color is nice and has a good texture to it. It looks like a much more expensive case than it is.
The only quip I would have thus far is that the volume buttons are on the bottom when in the viewing position...it's a minor thing though and I don't know how it could have been designed otherwise because of the phone itself.
Overall a great deal and I will update my review as I use it and get some wear and tear on it ;-)
