HASH(0xa4151810) out of 5 stars Some useful information, but poorly organized. Feb. 9 2015

Before getting this book, I had read Layne Simpson's book, "Shotguns and Shotgunning" (or a title similar to that). I enjoyed that book and liked how sections were broken up depending on gun action (SxS, O/U, pump, semi-auto), gauge, and type of hunting or sport shooting. This made it easy to get into the content you were interested in. An index at the back helped to even further guide you to specific tidbits of interest.

This book wasn't written as cover-all guide to guns, ammo, hunting, and target shooting. Instead, it's a collection of questions people had submitted that Simpson responded to in magazines over numerous years. This isn't a bad thing. It's just that it's hit-and-miss whether things you are interested are actually addressed in the book. Also, the content is not organized in any sort of predictable fashion. There are six sections: rifles, shotguns, handgun, ammo, reloading, and optics. But within each section, the information is just thrown together. One question may be about stock length. the next might be about whether to choose a 7mm or 30-06. The next might be about what gun to take on an African safari. Then some question about reading serial numbers. And there is no index. If you're just browsing through for leisure reading, that's fine, but if you are seeking specific information, you might have to skim through 100 other "rifle" questions before you find what you want.

Another issue that may be relevant to some. This book was published in 2005. ARs weren't as popular at the time, and there is little, if any, information about these rifles.

HASH(0xa4151e40) out of 5 stars Good reference? Jan. 30 2012

This is a compilation of the author's answers to commonly asked questions over his years of magazine article writing. It's not particularly entertaining reading, but is pretty informative for interested shooters, and may make a good reference book.
