The presentation RS provide you has been mentioned in many other reviews, so I won't go into it here other than to say it tries hard, but ultimately fails to provide anything more than a hint at how the language should be spoken. I found the flexibility the software provides in spoken language was far too lenient: instead of forcing the correct tone and pronunciation, I could pass most of the exercises with phrases that were not close enough to the necessary intonations to pass muster with any speaker, and as the weeks and months went by, things got worse, not better. Bad habits in pronunciation of tones did not get improved, and this simply made it worse and worse.
The speakers used in these exercises get it right (according to my wife, who speaks six Chinese dialects fluently), but when she saw how I could get by with "close" words, she simply got frustrated. "Not even close" was a common expression as I tried to imitate the native speakers, but the software accepted by feeble attempts. After five months of working at this, every single day, my Mandarin is so bad she says anyone in China who heard me speak would not understand what I was trying to say. The fact that bad pronunciations are actually encouraged didn't make for a very useful experience. The lack of proper recognition of tones was an issue, to be sure, but so was the recognition of sounds apart from the tones. Seriously, I could pass some exercises with non-sense noises!
Of course, this is not an inexpensive set of language lessons, and once your "free" time with the online instructors is up (which is far too fast considering you don't need them right at the start), the continual yammering for payment had me uninstalling the software very quickly. If I didn't have my wife to help me learn, I would have considered this box a total waste of money, but at least she was willing to help me through the exercises and correct my (and RS') pronunciations.
While I have used RS to improve my French and German, which are atonal, I can't see this being useful for tonal languages. I had a similar experience with the RS Vietnamese series about four years ago, and I should have learned from it! In the end, I went back to some competitive products (Pimsleur and Fluenz) and found them so much better I really regret my RS purchase.
Maybe this approach will work for you, but it certainly didn't for me. Despite a very solid effort, over five months I think my Mandarin has barely improved, and I would have been better off spending the money on a live tutor. I can't recommend for non-tonal language speakers, alas.
This set is certainly useful for those who already have some understanding of the characters from having studied Japanese.
One thing I do not like is the headset which is TERRIBLE......will be going out to purchase a different one that is one headpiece with mic rather than two cumbersome earpieces.
Overall.....for my purposes, I am really pleased as I can rely on old learning to help with the new. One warning.....before you use the voice recognition, be sure to learn the tones on YouTube. There are several really good tutorials there.
Rosetta Stone is doing the absolute best they can to draw a path on the ground and you follow it. If you do, it will get you there, their way. In other words, you think like they do, you repeat what they say, a million times, and, like all babies, you will get it sooner or later. But, we are not babies. Our brain is full of junk which gets in our way of following Rosetta Stone's logic. And when we guessed wrong, we will be marked wrong, not that we are wrong, but we are wrong guessing Rosetta Stone's logic. This is quite interesting. This is exactly what babies go through learning a language but babies don't feel anything. They don't know how else to think or feel. So, before you buy this, before you throw in $500, be ready to become a child. Don't let your frustrations get in your way. It will probably take me a year before I can finish it and tell you whether it works or not. I am only at Level 1 lesson 3 and going nowhere. But, the best part of $500 is that you are committed. That's the motivation.
