About the Author

Robin Nixon has worked with and written about computers since the early 1980s (his first computer was a Tandy TRS 80 Model 1 with a massive 4KB of RAM!). One of the web sites he developed presented the world's first radio station licensed by the music copyright holders. In order to enable people to continue to surf while listening, Robin also developed the first known pop-up windows. He has also worked full time for one of Britain's main IT magazine publishers, where he held several roles including editorial, promotions, and cover disc editing.

I cannot say I like this book. While I can still learn pretty much from this book, but I did not get any inspired moment as an experienced programmer as read more than 100 pages.

This book does not only target the beginner of PHP, but also target the beginner of programming. So, if you are an experienced programmer at any other programming language, you will find you are learning how IF, LOOP, etc. works in the book, not just a renewal of syntax under PHP's coat.

Here just listed a few places I think the book needs to improve:
On page 23: The book mentions you can change port# from 80 to 8080 from Service and Port Settings. But does not mention you also have to change from configuration file "httpd.conf" and "httpd-ssl.conf". Without changing these 2 places, PHP cannot start.
On page 100: There is a title "Do not Pass Arguments by Reference". This is wrong, objects can and has to be passed by reference. In fact, it is only the & sign which is deprecated, but the book does not explain it well. This really confuses an experienced programmer.
On page109: it mentions: "A class may require or prohibit arguments; it may also allow arguments but not require them." But the book does not explain further in which condition a class "require, prohibit, or allow but not require" arguments. Leave leaders in confusion.

Great refresher on programming! Also learning something new with MySQL. Good examples which can be found online instead having to write out each example it's much easier to copy and paste.
