Product Description

Fans of the Hell to Pay series will love this new spin-off saga, Hell's Legacy!

Garrison Taggart doesn't have time to deal with touchy-feely junk like "trust issues" or "feelings." His dad's health is waning and the family's Wyoming ranch is being sabotaged. Too bad his supernatural ability to tell when someone is lying has been exactly zero help in ferreting out the betrayer so far. So, when sweet schoolteacher Sara Lopez raises concerns about his son being bullied, who can blame a guy for getting a little testy?

The last thing Sara needs is any more attention or gossip after her recent breakup with big-shot rancher Hank Brand. So her attraction to surly but sexy Garrison, Hank's rival, is entirely unwanted. When she uncovers an insane plot to kidnap the Taggart boy and throws herself in harm's way to protect him, Garrison must risk his deepest secret and his own life to save the people he cares for the most. But will his heroics cost him everything?

This is a terrific start to a new series.

Garrison Taggart has always lived on the ranch that he is now running for his father. There is always lots to do and not enough hours in a day to do everything so when his son's second-grade teacher, Sara Lopez, tells Garrison that Zach is having trouble at school he doesn't handle it well. Sara wants the best for her students so she asks Garrison personal questions hoping to get a better idea of Zach's issues, but that worries Garrison even more. He's afraid she has seen a paranormal ability in his son since the rest of the family has them. Sara was actually concerned about the Brand boys bullying Zach. Some of the Brands hate the Taggarts and are making life pretty bad for them.

I liked the characters in this book. Well, except for Garrison. While he was physically perfect and very competent at running the ranch, his personality left a lot to be desired. He was very brisk and somewhat grumpy. Of course, he had lots of reasons for this, like his wife leaving him a year ago and cleaning out his bank accounts - leaving him with financial problems, the Brands trying to get his land, his father's health and his son being bullied are just some of his problems. Sara was a wonderful woman but she had her own problems. She was still trying to live down the trouble she caused in this town when she was younger. She also had to stay in her job for 4 years in return for her college education, so no matter how hard she found it she had to stay in there.

With the unusual abilities, these cowboys had this wasn't a typical western romance. It was interesting to see the way the author worked out the feelings Sara and Garrison had for each other.

A paranormal cowboy. Well, I have to say that this is a first. And I liked it!!

Garrison Taggert has major trust issues. But who can really blame him after his wife took off and left him with their son and then emptied out his accounts??? She was a real prize, that one. He's been trying to hold everything together for his family and their ranch. So when his son's new teacher, Sara Lopez, brings up the fact that he's being bullied and asks one too many personal questions, Garrison wonders what her true motives are. It's no secret that Sara's ex-boyfriend is Hank, who clearly hates Garrison's guts. Or that the principal of the school is Hank's brother. Or that the boys bullying his son are none other than Hank's nephews. So of course Garrison uses his psychic powers to detect if Sara's motives are as pure as she claims.

There's a rabidly insane ex, a kidnapping plot, some strange things happening on the ranch, and a force that seems to be hovering over them all and intent on destruction. This turned out to be a surprising intense and suspenseful romance.

"There's Evil in Them Thar Hills" and I'm for one interested in how the author will continue this story.

Wow! Just Wow! Oh, and did I mention wow? David definitely launches her new series with a bang with this novel. I devoured it in a single sitting. This world comes to life with vivid descriptions and intricate world building. The plot is unique and had me guessing. I love how David introduced me to different elements of what is going on in this town and around the area through the various characters that we meet. The uniqueness of the plot combined with the aspects of mystery were gripping. And the danger and suspense? They heightened my connection with the fantastic characters that David develops. The lines between good and evil are somewhat blurred at times, but the characters that I connected with were unforgettable. I love the way that we get to know their different powers and how differently they are presented.

All in all this novel came together as a fantastic start to David's new series that definitely has me hooked. Oh, and the bit of a possible cliffhanger at the ending? Yeah. That's got my attention and definitely has me guessing what will happen next..

Please note that I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another reasonable book spoiled by lack of editing July 9 2017

Small town ranching community. Single father of a troubled 8-year-old son. A teacher with a past. Throw in some supernatural abilities and the romance thickens.

The Brands are hard to avoid. Their ranch is next door, one brother runs the local hardware store, another is school principal, twin boys are in the same school, their father the sheriff, ranchers congregate at the only cafe in town.

The combination of paranormal, esp, and insanity create a milieu that is broken all too often by lack of editing and glaring grammatical errors. Several times the author even misspells her principal character’s name. As the title suggests the hero of the piece has been betrayed on many levels. I am confused as to why a man in possession of a rifle would prefer to resort to a slug match with a crazed maniac with seemingly superhuman strength.

The book smacks of a text hammered out quickly and published without any review. After waffling over their relationship for 250 pages the final reconciliation rings rather hollow.

“I care about who you are now. And the woman in front of me is beautiful, intelligent, and hotter than molten lava. If you think that we could have a future together, I want to try. I love you, Sara Lopez.” – Garrison Taggart

Boy, oh, boy! A new book series from one of my favorite paranormal writers - and it's western themed?!

In Jillian David's new series, we follow the lives of the Taggart siblings, who all seem to have more on their plate than just taking care of the family's ranch. Born with supernatural abilities, they all have to struggle through their social life on top of being at odds with their very normal father. Garrison, the second-born of the family, has always been able to read people - determining whether they were being honest or not. But this ability has cost him greatly. Now a single father, he finds himself falling in love with Sara Lopez, his son's teacher. Being burnt once, can he open up to her and finally trust in someone outside his family after so long?

I meant it when I said that this writer is one of my favorites in the paranormal genre. I obviously have others, but there are only a few occasions in life where you find yourself paying special attention to certain authors. And this is one of those. After the Hell to Pay series (which is amazing, by the way, go read it!), she decided to tackle one of my TOP fantasies: cowboys with superpowers! And the result was pretty much awesome!

Not only did I experience the true nature of a rancher's life - the hardships, the downtimes, the day-to-day struggle - but I also had the pleasure of seeing what a HUMAN does when they're born with gifts they don't exactly find convenient. Now, of course, most of us would be ecstatic to have minds with freaking superpowers. But we all speak from a vantage point of convenience, we haven't really experienced it to really now what it's like. The Taggart siblings, though, weren't like that. Their abilities were useful, yes, but they still put a damper on their social lives. They couldn't just connect with someone, because they always had to hide - even their father didn't seem agreeable with what his kids could do. And they could also get hurt, which is often happily ignored in paranormal fiction.

Garrison in particular had his heart broken, and his trust issues made it impossible for him to be what we call a social butterfly. He was moody, and gruff, and his inner hurt made him in turn daily damage whatever bridges he tried to build with those around him. He was quick to anger, and there were times his grudges and stubborness were out of this world!

It was a good thing Sara seemed to be as patient as possible with him, although, to be fair, she too had her issues. Thanks to her past, she tended to misunderstand what others told her - OK, in Garrison's case, he helped that flaw grow even more by constantly keeping his foot in his mouth - and she would, nine times out of ten, blame herself and drown in self-pity whenever something went wrong.

Those two had their hearts broken by the people they had loved. The result was two bitter adults, self-conscious as hell, trying to find common ground. Not that I'm complaining. Their fumbling around was half of the time entertaining, and the other half fantastically HOT! When they finally decided to trust in each other, it was touching how they seemed to keep praising each other, not being able to see their own worth, but somehow recognising their lover's value.

Now on to the supernatural part of the book. It certainly didn't hold much importance for the better half of the story, other than the fact that the siblings were not your everyday ranchers. But near the end, we get to see that our dear Mrs. David just couldn't resist adding her horrifying talent in the mix. That's right, people, if any of you have read the Hell to Pay series, then you know this woman can make you twist around in your seat in an effort to not pee yourself from fear. She doesn't just write awful scenes of torture or scary stuff just to add something in her book. Every one of those has its own chest-pressuring aura of horror, and while they're not massive and they come sparse, they still manage to make you wish you chance upon them while it's still daytime. And they ALWAYS are important and hold significance to the story.

Jillian David is one of those few writers that can actually combine hot, sizzling romance with witty humor and terrifying danger, and make it seem tangible and quite real to the reader. All in the span of a book. And that's saying something, people! She even deliberately had the bad guy repeating his lines again and again, to show how much his psychosis had damaged his common sense and ability to function and think logically. (admittedly, at first I thought it was a typo, but when I realized it wasn't I had to take a break from reading, shivering all over!)

I'm off to start the next book - and btw, I call dibs on Kerr, and ship him with Izzy! If those two don't end up, I sure hope the female lead David will put by his side is worthy of this panties-dropping-quality man!

“I don’t want anyone else, Garrison.” – Sara Lopez

Garrison tried to hide his feelings for her because she used to date one of the Brand men, and he didn't know if he could trust her. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat! I couldn't read fast enough to find out what happened with the kidnapping. There are some REALLY evil people in this story, adding to the suspense.

I am so glad I won a copy of this book and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you enjoy romantic suspense with a paranormal twist, you should read Legacy of Lies.

Wow, well that was a surprise, I haven’t read anything by this author previously but that is very much my mistake because judging by this book, I may have been missing out!
There is more to Garrison Taggert than meets the eye but that isn’t what initially comes to mind as you read your way through this story, what is blatantly obvious is the fact that he is up to his eyes in responsibility. Single parent, raising his son Zach, who is the absolute apple of his eye, he is also doing everything he can to keep his father’s ranch from failing but it isn’t as easy as one might think when it looks like the damage that is being done is being orchestrated!
Sara Lopez, works in Zach’s school and when she expresses her thoughts on a situation that appears to be brewing between Zach and a couple of other boys in the school, it is safe to say that Garrison doesn’t take the news well, especially when the boys involved happen to be related to the school principal.
They seemed to be at opposite ends of the same rope in some respects, Sara has a plan to do what she has to do to pay off what she owes and then be on her merry way, moving on to other things, Copper River isn’t where she sees her long term future being, Garrison on the other hand can’t see his future anywhere else, the ranch is in his DNA and he is going to fight with everything he has to save it and with pressure from all sides he has his work cut out. Especially when he is faced with relentless pressure from the folks who own the neighbouring ranch.
The Brand family own the ranch next door and while they have been banging on at Garrison and his father to get them to sell but all to no avail, but this situation was going to get a little more muddied than anyone could have ever imagined because having previously been in a relationship with Hank Brand and now in a fledging relationship with Garrison…Sara is definitely in the spotlight and it isn’t somewhere she is comfortable being.
But will she cave to unwarranted pressure and blackmail by Hank and give up on Garrison? I had everything crossed that she was made of tougher stuff and that she would ride it out! And when she gets wind of the fact that a plot is afoot to kidnap Zach, I would have to say that Sara did me proud, she really came into her own but with obstacles still to overcome, she was eventually left relying on Garrison to find her and Zach before it was too late?
Could he save his son? Could he find them in time or would he be facing a tragedy and more importantly would he be able to protect his secret?
What secret? Yep, I know I kept that little gem to myself, but Garrison isn’t just any ordinary rancher, he has this very special ability that he prefers to keep to himself but when it comes to a choice between saving his boy and keeping ability secret, there really is no choice at all…but what will it cost him in the long run?
The story was fabulous, the characters were engaging, the descriptions that the author was able to piece together were fantastic, so evocative and brilliantly illuminating. I adored the scenario and the way the story’s pace ebbed and flowed with an almost natural pulse.
Great book!
