For those trying to use this as an information source for older movies, Maltin appears to be winnowing out the older Hollywood actors and leaving us with out descriptions for TCM etc. At least half the time i can't find an older film in his book and i'm not talking about obscure films.
I use this book for information on films - date, director, who's in it, a brief precis, but i'm not a fan of Maltin as a critic and his rather staid and simplistic criteria for film excellence. And his dumbed down version of alphabetizing is confusing and irritating.
If Ebert or Mick Martin had had this kind of film compendium i would have chosen theirs.

I'm far from being a cinema expert. I usually just tag along and enjoy the show. My boyfriend, however, is a cinephile (read: movie addict). He can beat y'all at Trivial Pursuit in the "Arts and Entertainment category". And he was thrilled to receive this book.

Maltin's reviews are generally very critical and if he gives something a good review you know it's probably a very good movie. I like some of the movies he doesn't rate as highly, but he is consistent in his opinions and standards.

Sadly these books are no longer being updated. Were the ultimate place to go for movie reviews and details. Bought them annually until they were discontinued. The 2014 edition is the last edition published. Have it of course.
