Product Description

From Library Journal

Clunis and Green have put together a wonderful guide for lesbian parents and parents-to-be. Drawing on their own and others' experiences, the authors address many of the problems that lesbian parents have to face. These problems vary from deciding how to get pregnant to dealing with homophobic ex-spouses, involuntary "outing" by children, and questions about why their family is so different. Clunis and Green devote much of the book to giving a quick but thorough rundown on the developmental stages children go through. They cover issues all parents have to face, lesbian or not, from prenatal care to how to live with an adult child who has returned home. The book does have a few problems-the chapter on dealing with confronting racism is unnecessarily preachy, for instance-but they do not detract from the overall quality. The appended list of parenting and gay and lesbian resources is particularly useful. This book deserves a place in every public library.

One of the best and most comprehensive books I have ever read concerning lesbian parenting. This book addresses child development and provides a common sense guide to raising kids, all with a lesbian twist. In addition to the usual parenting issues, the book also addresses concerns specific to lesbian headed households, including homophobia from outsiders, how to deal with school issues, and more. I recommend this book to anyone who has children whether they are lesbian or not. This book has much to offer in the way of advice to all parents who are committed to raising healthy, happy, and tolerant children

I was very excited to get this book, but was slightly disappointed upon reading it. I was hoping it would focus more on problems and solutions unique to lesbian parents. While it did touch on these subjects, it focused more on basic parenting skills. The ideas were very good, just a little broader than i had expected.

I love the Lesbian people. This is one of the greatest books I have ever read that helps us raise our children in a difficult, homophobic world. Highly recommended.

There are so many books out there for the mom and dad families of the works. It's nice to have a go to book for the rest of us.

HASH(0xa14942b8) out of 5 stars Great resource Sept. 23 2013

This is both a good book for lesbian parents, and a good parenting book in general. The first half focused on issues exclusive to or more pronounced in lesbian families--coming out, bio vs. non-bio moms, divorce, racial issues/interracial families, and other things like that. The second half was more of a basic parenting book with some LGBT flavor to it.

I like that this book addressed a good deal of gay issues, while at the same time admitted that sometimes being a gay family doesn't have anything to do with the majority of parenting. I mean really, when you're unsure of how to properly care for your newborn, your 6 year old refuses to eat his vegetables, or your teenager is using marijuana, do you really think your sexuality has anything to do with it? But luckily they DO cover some lesbian issues in the "parenting" section like children asking about paternity, dealing with homophobia in your children's school or society, and defining the role of the non-biological/legal mother. I liked the anecdotes and stories from real parents as well.

This was a good book but I think it IS definitely in need of an update. The fact that gay marriage and rights have made such strides since this was published makes some points a bit obsolete. I also think that now more lesbian families are children born to/adopted to lesbians to start with, not children a woman had within a heterosexual marriage before she came out. It also would have been nice if they addressed more adoption issues.

HASH(0xa14944b0) out of 5 stars Wanted More Than Just A Way To Plan Pregnancy Jan. 8 2014

My partner and I have bought other books on the subject but we found that there was a lot more emphasis on the CREATION of the children, then on the RAISING of the children. This book brings a nice balance. Yes, it does include all the other basic info that many other books will have, but it has a lot more in depth sections for AFTER baby is born. I appreciated sections for single/divorced moms, dating moms, moms coming out to their children later in life, explaining relationships to children, etc. There was coverage for every kind of lesbian parent raising a child. Very happy with this purchase; really good information.
