Review

"A guide for women who yearn to channel Audrey Tautou. . . . Personable, anecdote-filled, and studded with lifestyle tips . . . its vivacity and sincerity have struck a chord among women who would like a French role model of their own, but don't have a year to spend apprenticing with one in Paris." (The New York Times)

"Part tribute to the effortlessly glamorous Parisian way of life, and part tutorial . . . on how to emulate the French je ne sais quoi." (Daily Mail (UK))

“Downright intriguing. . . . You’ll close the book feeling inspired.” (The Plain Dealer)

"The writing here, a combination of elegance and breeziness, seems to reflect Madame Chic’s personal philosophy that life is to be lived fully and elegantly." (Smoky Mountain News)

“Winningly combines sincerity and self-deprecation . . . sweet-natured and well-intentioned . . . full of advice.” (Kirkus Reviews)

"Scott's book encourages American women to live simply and beautifully by eating well, slowing down, simplifying their lives and enjoying life." (The News and Observer (Raleigh, NC))

"Scott blends vignettes and fun encounters with philosophies and lessons that helped her evolve a sense of style and aesthetics. Lessons from Madame Chic is a fine pick for anyone interested in women's fashion, style, and how the French have recreated style lessons." (California Bookwatch)

This book sounded promising, but there was little here that I hadn't heard elsewhere. The tone of the book is very preachy, and the chapters superficially touch upon coming of age lessons, as opposed to "stylish secrets" of the French.

Interesting read. Many thought provoking ideas which I have followed through on personally. I especially liked the idea of living using one's best in everyday situations as well as reducing my wardrobe to only those things that bring me joy. Living and dressing well each day, using the best china, and cultivating intellect rather than spending time watching senseless TV makes sense to me and also to this author. Her style and word usuage are simple making for an easy read, and although there was a fair bit of repetition it is forgivable.

I wanted to like this book with its pretty stripes and soft watercolor imagery. I read with hope until halfway through the book when I realized she was repeating the same points. Over and over. I haven't finished the book, as some parts were clunky or very predictable. I would not recommend this to a friend or a frenemy. Read How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are for a witty and naughty glimpse into the psyche of the marketable and idealized Parisienne.

A little gem! The book is a fast read about the experience of a young girl living in Paris with her sophisticated, aristrocatic hosts. She learns a lot from the family and artfully and skillfully shares the information with the reader. I truly enjoyed the book and advice. Our consumerism North American society has a lot to learn from this family. Great wisdom from such a young lady. Simply delightful.
