Gemma Hayes' much anticipated fourth studio album, Let it Break, will be released on Monday April 2nd and is an evolution of Gemma's unique style of music, combining prog rock, folk and electronica. The album is a collaboration with producer David Odlum, and features Paul Noonan of Bell X1 and Ann Scott. Keep Running is the first single to be taken from the album .Over the years, Gemma's songs have appeared in countless TV programmes and films from Grey's Anatomy to One Tree Hill and most recently The Vampire Diaries and the upcoming Abigail Breslin movie, Janie Jones. Her debut LP, Night on My Side, received much critical acclaim from all corners, garnering a UK Mercury Prize nomination and earning her an award as Ireland's best female artist. Gemma recorded the album in Blackbox Studios, France and Westland Studios, Dublin. Produced by David Odlum and Gemma Hayes, Let It Break was recorded and mixed by David Odlum and mastered by John Golden at Golden Mastering Los Angeles. 5.0 out of 5 stars Let It Break- my new Gemma Hayes favourite!!! April 27 2012
By T. Fortune - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I've been a big fan of Gemma Hayes since discovering her amazing music via Astralwerks Records a few years ago. It was at that time I also found Beth Orton on the same label.

Like Beth, Gemma has a very appealing & plaintive quality to her voice- it just draws you in. The lyrics are smart, real, & you feel the tenderness underneath.

The song, "Shock To My System"- the single most promoted as the "hit", is a sweet & up-tempo song describing how it feels to meet someone who lights you up inside, makes you understand how little life you had in you before, and then they are gone...Yep~ a feel-good, lost-love song.

But I think my favourite is probably "All I Need", followed closely by "Ruin".

The music & backing vocals are excellent. I have had this playing pretty much non-stop (in my car, too!). Every song is great. Do yourself a favour & buy this CD- then go back & get her others. You will be sooo glad you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome June 6 2012

Amazon has been telling me for months that I should buy this CD, and I finally broke down. Wow. This is just awesome work. The production and vocals, not to mention the songwriting are spectacular. I am really impressed. For a special treat, check out her cover of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting" on youtube.
5.0 out of 5 stars Just to Be Beside You April 18 2016
By Billy Duke - Published on
Gemma Hayes continues her plaintive, intoxicating run as the Irish Queen of indie folk rock. Let It Break has both plenty of sadness and hopefulness to go around. The 1-2-3 punch of stunners Shock to the System, To Be Beside You, and Ruin is an almost unbeatable sequence I've played on repeat many times. Ruin experiments with electronic rhythms and textures, to resounding success. Now if we could only get her to play some gigs in the US again...
5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet Jan. 1 2013

I love this woman's songwriting and this is her best album yet—the usual intelligent lyrics, combined with modern Irish melodies, sun g in her distinctive low and slightly nasal (but not annoying) voice. I downloaded it a year ago, but also wanted to support her by getting the actual CD, so I am glad to see it on Amazon.
