Product Description

Rae Maddox's mom, Gina, thinks nothing of packing up and moving. New apartment, new town, new job--it's all an adventure to Gina, but for Rae, each move is just one more friend lost, one more chance to feel like an outsider. When they arrive in Wisconsin, Gina promises to stay put until Rae graduates. Cautiously optimistic, she wades into the social whirl at Whitman High School, making a few friends and even earning a chance at love.

But when the vice principal pairs her with a new student, Allison Daly, things go bad in a big way. It seems Allison was orphaned after her parents died in a suspicious house fire, leaving their daughter to bounce between relatives' homes. When a sleepover at Rae's house goes terribly wrong, Rae sees a troubling side of Allison--and learns a few secrets about her own mother in the process. Suddenly Rae is at risk of losing everything and everyone she cares about--unless she steps up and takes charge of her life once and for all.

HASH(0x9f295e04) out of 5 stars Excellent book - a Must Read for all ages Feb. 23 2010

Life on Hold is a moving story of understanding, empathy, and maturity as 15-year old Rae and her nomadic mother both have some growing up to do. Forced to move to a new place almost every year, Rae desperately wants roots, a sense of family, and a place to belong. Although she tries to make herself invisible and stay out of trouble, two seemingly insignificant incidents lead to her being paired with a troubled new student. As Rae reluctantly shows Allison around the school and introduces her to her two friends, she really just wants to finish this duty and go back to her normal routine, but Allison's stories don't add up and Rae is curious to discover the truth of Allison's traumatic past. Rae and her mother reach out to Allison and try to help her to heal and Rae finally allows herself to both be a good friend and to open up more to others. Helping Allison also enables Rae and her mother to face some long-lasting problems in their relationship and to reach a new understanding of one another. Great character development and growth, realistic dialogue, and a touching storyline. Highly recommend!

This was a beautiful coming of age story about Rae, a young girl that decides she is tired of a life of being shuffled around at the whim of her flaky mother from small town to small town all over the country, never laying down permanent roots. She allows herself to form more lasting friendships and even a romance as she decides that this time things will be different.

This is a beautiful and engaging story about realizing what is important in life and following your heart. Well written and enjoyable!! Karen McQuestion is undoubtly one of the best new authors around!!!!!!!!

This is another great book by the Author. All of her books are great if you love a good story about everyday life with great characters, and her newest is no different. This particular story would be great for the highschool age on up. I wish there had been more stories like this back when I was younger. I love her character of Rae and how empowered she made her. I bought the Kindle version and the formatting was great. I can't wait for more of her books, they have become a must read for me.

I love the fact that through Kindle I'm finding so many great authors that I might not have found otherwise. Karen McQuestion is one that I'm so glad I've had the privilege to read!

She captures your interest right away & really makes you feel like you know the characters and want to be close to them!

This one really grabbed me, having moved multiple times in school I could somewhat connect with Rae. The more I read, the more I wanted to know about Alison.

GREAT read!! I highly recommend reading this author!

Another Great story Karen... Life on Hold

The insight that Karen put's into all her character's and her story's show undeniably that whatever the story topic is, who ever the characters maybe, she is so cognizant of her surroundings and situation's , I am sure she was like this through out her life, which gives her the ability to stop and think of what each character actually feel's like in different situations. She let's her fans actually get inside the head of her characters , or we have all been, known or heard of these characters .
My heart went out to Allison, we've all known a Blake, a Rae, a Mason, and other characters.

Karen is very informative, very knowledgable, she know's the in's and out's of whatever she write's, she must do research on making sure her details are accurate. Karen does not have to go into long details, her details are short and right on target. I could understand each character's outlook in life,

Karen is a very conscientious, caring, thoughtful, understanding person, she has compassion, love, and a quick wit, as you can see throughout her books. We would like to have Karen as a friend in real life.

I enjoyed this book very much and once again found it hard to put down. I also like the way Karen ends all of her stories, she doesn't go on and on and on with what happens to all the characters after the story ends. To me it would inhibit the main story. Just my Honest opinion.

Life on Hold will make you stop and think about what some real life people go through , and we all could have more compassion towards people we could all help through rough times, with compassion, understanding and love. This world certainly could emulate what Karen's story relate's in this book. I will recommend this book for ages 10 to 100.

Thank You for the 5th time Karen !!!!!
