HASH(0xa45a072c) out of 5 stars The Life and Memoirs of Dr. Pi Dec 1 2010
By maryland reader - Published on
Format: Paperback
I received this as a gift and enjoyed it a lot. A suggestion of Borges, Barthelme, Calvino along with something quite different. Elliptical but grounded, it draws you into the edges of a series of stories that might even be interlocking. Maybe there's a dash of Zen koan in there, too. There is unexpected drama, given the brevity of each story. And it's funny. A wonderful surprise.

A charming series of oddly fascinating vignettes featuring the enigmatic Doctor Pi in a rare English translation. Whimsical and courageous, the mysterious doctor strolls placidly in and out of weird and dangerous situations, proceeding on his way, determined and unfazed. This little work introduced me to an unknown writer and made me want more.

When God and Edgar Bayley gaze down on Earth, both look favourably on Emily Toder and feel grateful for her translation of Doctor Pi and Other Stories. I have heard that on a sunny day He rests on a cloud and reads this book.

HASH(0xa4889990) out of 5 stars I can't grasp it.. Jan. 30 2011
By Meg Sumner - Published on
Format: Paperback
Okay, possibly I'm completely off base with this, but I could not connect with this book at all. And I really wanted to! I normally love South American writers and poets (Borges, Neruda) as well as authors (Benedetti, De Barios. But this made no sense to me. I can't grasp the point.

It features short vignettes of Doctor Pi, sort of a nerdy James Bond man of mystery with a penchant for brunettes. Maybe there is some literary reference I'm missing, but I couldn't even finish this. There was no draw, no pull that made me want to learn more or see where it was headed. In fact, because of the short (a few paragraphs) sections, it was puzzling to try and see if they were linked, and if so, what that meant in terms of a story. I really didn't want to work that hard.

I may keep it around and try another time...but really, given how short the book is (maybe 1/4" thick?) there wasn't much room for it to improve if it was going to. Just not my thing, and it feels pretty good to admit it!
