I'm an art snob 😉 so normally skip student art supplies and go straight for the pro version and this product was no exception. I find it can be a waste of money to purchase student grade only to have it not be of great quality, whereby you end up purchasing both (or at least I have cos I want my work to be as great as can be). So, I purchased a smaller, 8oz bottle of Liquitex Artist's Gesso (for maybe around the same price, I'm not sure) and when I ran out, I replaced it with the Basics one because of the much lower price. Honestly, I can't tell much of a difference! I believe the pro formula is more opaque and a little thicker and I like that with that series you can also choose a black or clear formula but for a standard, basic product thats essential for any artist; there isn't that much of a difference. I will continue to purchase the Basics Gesso. However, I may also try the Liquitex Professional Clear one soon, as that might be a good idea for covering my line drawing. In the meantime, I'm really, pleasantly surprised by this product and I'd highly recommend it.
By the way, my Royal & Langnickel gesso brushes in the picture were also purchased from Amazon. They have been a great buy too.
As for this gesso, you won't need much at all to get a wonderful coverage. It is very opaque and applies evenly and covers even the darkest colors very easily. I generally only have to apply one coat for most colors unless I'm covering a lot of black and I might use two coats. After I apply each coat I sand the canvas with a fine to medium grain sand paper to give it a nice smooth working surface and presto! It's like new and no one ever has to know I'm working on a used canvas.
Prismacolor color pencils: Worked really well. Was able to apply a lot of water and blend. I could even go in after the watercolor was dry with more water and re-work it. Was able to use lots of water without destroying the non-watercolor paper.
Koi Watercolors: Same as the watercolor pencils, as far as how it behaved.
Several types of colored pencils: Didn't work well, I'm not a fan of using pencils over the Gesso. The lines were rougher and hard to blend and control. They created a lot of colored dust too so that could stain the picture if you aren't careful.
Sticklers: Able to apply where needed, no issues.
Acrylic paint (Americana): Was able to use acrylic without water, and also with water as more of a wash.
Iridescent Medium: Mixed with watercolor, made the applied color very shimmery. Didn't give any issues over the Gesso.
Art Masking Fluid: Worked fine on top of the Gesso. Still protected the paper from the watercolor, and when I pulled it off I could still feel the Gesso on the paper underneath.
