I bought a bunch off these. I am a mechanic, and can alway use spark testers. These where inexpensive, but each one I used, the clip fell apart. Lisle dropped the ball on this design. They make many fine tools. This one should not have gone into production with that clip. Do yourself a favor spend $2.53 more and get the Thexton (THE404). I have used Thexton spark checkers for years and they have never broken yet. The body of the lisle spark checker is nice, the screw in piece is heavy duty, and I like how it adjust better than the Thexton. If lisle would have put a clip on that doesn't fall apart the first time you use the tool, then they would have blown the Thexton out of the water in terms of price and quality.

It does as it is intended to do, it measures spark output... We got to use this right after giving it to my Dad at christmas.... My car wouldn't start again there was no spark....boom one ignition coil later we are back in business.... :)

Not worth the money. Screw in post is not retained once the proper gap is adjusted. Post also in not retained to be perpendicular to the base, so there's no guarantee that what you are testing is the gap that you wanted. Clamp is right on the piece, so if you don't have plentiful spark plug wire length, it becomes complicated to find a close ground that isn't the battery post. Bought this to test the spark on my motorcycle. Shocked myself a couple of times, it is an extremely simple tool, but was not constructed/designed to make any part of it easy to use/fool proof. Will test my spark the old fashioned way from now on.

These work fine if you know what you're doing, and they are certainly cheap enough. Best to use a clip lead or ground wire to it to provide the ground. I check the spark at a wider gap than the plug, because the gap in compression is always harder to fire than a spark in free air, so it's irrelevant what the plug gap is anyway. Easy to spread out and check for a weak spark plug wire feed. If you want it to stay in place use a little blue loctite or thread dope.
