Product Description

The Little Hummingbird is the embodiment of this relatively new style of Haida comics, which combines elements of traditional North Pacific arts and narrative, in this case that of the Haida, and the design of Japanese manga. —Globe & Mail

STARRED: Evocative artwork complements this optimistic story that encourages everyone to take responsibility for their home and the planet. —Best Books for Kids & Teens 2011

About the Author

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas challenges native stereotypes through illustrative story telling. His artwork is informed by many years of dedication to public service and political activism, mostly on behalf of the Haida. Yahgulanaas creates pop-graphic narratives that riff on traditional Haida stories and painting techniques, and developed "Haida Manga"—the distinctive art form for which he is widely known. A trickster-like sense of humour contributes to his work's appeal. Yahgulanaas' books include Flight of the Hummingbird, A Tale of Two Shamans, The Last Voyage of the Black Ship, Hachidori, and—most recently—Red, a graphic novel.

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas has exhibited in several major galleries, including the Bill Reid Gallery, the McMichael Gallery, the Museum of Anthropology, the Glenbow Museum, and the National Arts Center in Ottawa. His Haida Anime "Flight of the Hummingbird" is featured on YouTube. For the past two decades, besides developing his unique visual style, Yahgulanaas has spent most of his time working with other Haida people to prevent their homeland, Haida Gwaii, from being logged. Yahgulanaas lives on Bowen Island, British Columbia.

I love the fact that this book is physically bigger. I like the info on hummingbirds in the back. I love that the book is slightly re-written for younger kids.
Only one BIG drawback... Dukdukdiya is gone.
The Little Hummingbird is named Dukdukdiya in the original book, Flight of the Hummingbird. Kids LOVE to say Dukdukdiya. They LOVE that name.
If the hummingbird was still named Dukdukdiya in this book, it would be PERFECT.
Please put it back in the next edition.

HASH(0x9b8f90f0) out of 5 stars I nice little book that reminds us of our responsibilities Oct. 21 2011
By Wildness - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is a very nice, but little, book that tells a short parable about the flight of a humingbird that saves a forest. It is well written and illustrated by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. Though the main story is a short four pages, it delivers it message effectively and succinctly. The added value with this book is the Afterward by Nobel Peace Price winner Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan woman known for her work planting trees in Africa (A previous version of this book also included an afterword by the Dalai Lama, but this edition does not).

Again, this is a short book, but it is a nice little package of important, though-provoking words. It would make a great gift for the environmentally enlightened as well as the environmentally challenged.

A Guide to my Book Rating System:

1 star = The wood pulp would have been better utilized as toilet paper.
2 stars = Don't bother, clean your bathroom instead.
3 stars = Wasn't a waste of time, but it was time wasted.
4 stars = Good book, but not life altering.
5 stars = This book changed my world in at least some small way.

HASH(0x9b8f9144) out of 5 stars A magnificent Haida-Manga children's work based on "Flight of the Hummingbird" Aug. 17 2010
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
"The Little Hummingbird" is a magnificent Haida-Manga children's work based on "Flight of the Hummingbird," a tale based on a South American indigenous story about the heroic efforts of a tiny hummingbird to carry drops of water to end a forest fire. The vivid, spare, three-color (black, white and red) Haida-style illustrations are stunning, carrying the storytelling to new, multi-mythic impact levels. Hummingbird is observed and approached by many of the larger animals of the forest, who wonder why she is carrying single drops of water in her beak to fight an enormous forest fire. When asked what she is doing, Hummingbird responds, "I'm doing everything I can." An inspirational message titled Do The Best You Can from Wangari Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, is included at the end of "The Little Hummingbird." An additional resource mentioned in the book is the Haida anime "Flight of the Hummingbird," by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas.
