HASH(0xa011324c) out of 5 stars A Good Concert by Merle Haggard & His Huge Backing Band March 31 2010
By Gary Covington - Published on Amazon.com
This was filmed on January 18, 1978. It has a running time of approximately 52 minutes. Overall, I was a little disappointed, I was expecting a better show. It's good, but it comes across as a little too "mellow" for me.

The line-up:
Merle Haggard - guitar, fiddle, vocals
Bonnie Owens (Merle's Ex)- tamborime, backing vocals
Ronnie Reno - guitar
Biff Adam - drums
Paul Anastasio - fiddle
Wayne Durham - bass
Norman Hamlet - steel guitar
Don Markham - saxaphone, trumpet
Roy Nichols - guitar
Gordon Terry - fiddle
Mark Yeary - piano

The songs:
1.Working Man Can't Get Nowhere Today
2.Silver Wings (A Merle Haggard Classic)
3.Ramblin' Fever
4.Lonesome Fugitive
5.Sing Me Back Home (Another Merle Haggard Classic)
6.Orange Blossom Special
7.Old Fashioned Love
8.Long Black Limousine
9.Cherokee Maiden
10.San Antonio Rose (a Bob Wills song)
11.Misery
12.Farmer's Daughter
13.Brain Cloudy Blues
14.Workin' Man Blues (Another Merle Haggard Classic)

Thanks!!!!
HASH(0xa00b82f4) out of 5 stars complete with some great yodeling. Although that one should have been included May 11 2016

I remember seeing this on Austin City Limits in 1979 and have been searching for it ever since. Merle Haggard had always been a superb singer and songwriter in the country field, but here, with his crack backup band the Strangers (including piano, steel guitar, 3 fiddle players including Merle himself on a few numbers, and sax), he expanded on that sound with extended jamming, touches of blues, jazz, bluegrass, and Western swing. All of the songs on the original telecast are included on this DVD except for backup singer Bonnie Owens' (married to Merle at the time) spirited performance of Patsy Montana's "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart",complete with some great yodeling. Although that one should have been included, everything here is top notch. I had always thought the show should have been released as a live album, but apparently his record label thought it was too much of a departure from his signature sound, and Merle himself seemed to retreat from this "country jazz" (as he labeled it) approach shortly after this performance. It's great to finally have this on CD and DVD. It reveals Merle not only as a fine singer and songwriter, but also as a competent fiddler and lead guitarist.
