About the Author
Ruth Stella MacLean is a retired registered nurse with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Mount Allison University. She is a retired Certified Management Accountant and obtained the designation of Canadian Heath Service Executive before leaving her position as Director of Ambulatory Care at the Moncton Hospital in Moncton N.B. Canada. Among her responsibilities as Director of Ambulatory Care, was the management of a Pain Clinic that dealt with treatment of chronic pain. Ruth Stella MacLean writes from the unique perspective of a person with chronic pain as well as a nurse and hospital manager for over fifteen years. She understands the medical system and how it works. This knowledge helped her manage her pain but did not go far enough in assuring her complete rehabilitation from a life of pain to a life of fulfillment and happiness. Living Successfully With Chronic Pain has real solutions offered by someone who has lived life not only as a healthcare professional managing a pain clinic, but also as a person who has received the best care the medical profession has to offer people with chronic pain. Yet it was not enough. This shortfall between what the medical model has to offer, and what the individual with chronic pain needs, is the focus of this book. She maintains a website for those interested in issues around chronic pain. www.livingsuccessfullywithchronicpain.com During her professional life as a hospital director, and later as published author, Ruth Stella MacLean gave speeches, workshops, radio and newspaper interviews, and continues to do speaking engagements and workshops whenever the opportunity arises. She’s a published fiction author under her pseudonym, Stella MacLean. She is presently under contract for two more Super Romance Books to be published by Harlequin. Wonderful to see a book out there, written not only by a qualified health professional, but also by someone who truly experiences chronic pain and lives with it daily. Ms. MacLean's journey from disbelief, to searching to be 'fixed,' to pity party, to understanding and learning how to be proactive toward her life with pain - is just plain inspiring to read. Her humor as she shares her personal journey and strategies for success, is a welcome addition. We can all learn as we understand her necessity to quit her normal life as a health practitioner - on a career path leading to hospital administration, to become a disabled-and-depressed wounded warrior and then how she moved on to become a very successful author. Hers is a demonstration that teaches a lot about hope as well as healing. A great book to inspire or those you love -or yourself - to do great things with the lives we have, despite the pain.
I strongly recommend "Living Successfully with Chronic Pain" not only for those suffering from actual physical pain but also to anyone in need of an emotional or spiritual lift. Ruth's book contains inspiration for everyone.

I have highlighted all the parts that really hit home for me and plan to go back and make specific notes in the margins and answer the variety of questions she asks along the way in her book. Then I will pass it to my CLOSE loved ones because I really believe it will help them understand me a better and look at things from my perspective. It's hard to talk about some of these topics with your loved ones but this book really makes it easier by plucking the topics right out of my head and spilling my emotions into the pages.
