That said, this book is much more than its introductory maps. I've carried it (and its predecessor, the 1st edition) with me in multiple trips to Africa, and kept it on my bedside in two years living as an expat in the continent. It covers just about every health issue you could have in a very non-nonsense manner. It is, of course, not meant as a substitute to actual medical case, but it is a very useful guide to initially consult on what to do when bad things happen to you. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of consulting this book, among others, after getting stung by a sting ray in Guinea-Bissau, nearly slicing off my thumb in an "orange-peeling accident" in Guinea, and suddenly developing a toothache in northern Niger. On each occasion, it felt indispensible until I could get medical help.
