Founded in 1819, William Collins & Sons published a range of Bibles, atlases, dictionaries, and reissued classics, expanding over the years to include legendary authors such as H. G. Wells, Agatha Christie, J. R. R. Tolkien, and C. S. Lewis.
The house of Mark Twain, the Brontë sisters, Thackeray, Dickens, John F. Now I have this edition with "The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion". I bought the set when its price went down from ~$140 to ~$70 (apparently another boxed set was coming). The quality of the books themselves are satisfactory.
The companion book is a serious disappointment. Immense scholarship went into the compilation of the book. But it's all textual: about variants, omissions, insertions and changes of text of this ans that passages. This is like the Bible's textual studies. And the book is not as compactly-produced as the others. It uses thicker paper.
I wanted a quick reference for questions:Who was the sallow-complexioned fellow's friend at Bree?, What's the name of the forest of Ents?, Who among Frodo's friends stayed behind at Crickhollow?
There are two other books for that purpose, apparently. And the companion book does not meet my needs ans wishes. Textual minutiae do not interest me. I have gone through it when beliefs in gods, prophesies, and all that were important. Now that scales have fallen off myne eyes, I do not want go through all the useless pointless anguish. I AM FREE!
