Product description

"Sloan hits it out of the park with her first Coming Home contemporary western romance[.] Maverick is a perfect hero: multilayered, complicated, deeply damaged, yet blooming with the new promise of love. Leighton is appealing and real, as are a strong supporting cast of characters whom readers will be glad to follow into sequels. Sloan enhances the gripping story with country songs that open each chapter. This absolutely spectacular effort catapults Sloan to the top of her genre." (--Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“The first book in Sloan’s Coming Home series is a super-sexy second-chance read with a handsome ex-rodeo cowboy hero and the girl he left behind. The characters are well-written and the bedroom scenes are hot…Sloan does a wonderful job with portraying the secondary characters, and it looks like Quinn’s story, which is next up, is going to be a good one.” (--RT VIP Salon)

“Sloan brings plenty of heat to this otherwise very thoughtful, building love story." (--Booklist)

Product Description

In Lost Rider, the first Western romance in New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Harper Sloan’s Coming Home series, an injured rodeo star encounters an old flame but will she be just what he needs to get back in the saddle?

Maverick Austin Davis is forced to return home after a ten-year career as a rodeo star. After one too many head injuries, he’s off the circuit and in the horse farming business, something he’s never taken much of a shine to, but now that it’s his late father’s legacy, familial duty calls. How will Maverick find his way after the only dream he ever had for himself is over?

Enter Leighton Elizabeth James, an ugly duckling turned beauty from Maverick’s childhood—his younger sister’s best friend, to be exact, and someone whose heart he stomped all over when she confessed her crush to him ten years back. Now Leighton is back in Maverick’s life, no longer the insecure, love-stricken teen—and Maverick can’t help but take notice. Sparks fly between them, but will Leighton be able to open her heart to the one man who broke it all those years ago?

Written in the vein of Diana Palmer and Lindsay McKenna, this Texas-set series is filled with sizzle, heart, and plenty of cowboys!

Maverick was a successful rodeo star until he injured his head so badly it ended his career. After ten years he has to return home, to his brother Clay and sister Quinn and to the girl he never allowed himself to love, Leighton. Maverick only has bad memories of the past. His father was a cold and abusive man and Maverick was forced to leave Pine Oak before the situation would have gotten completely out of hand. He never told Leighton how he felt, instead he hurt her feelings, so she wouldn't think about him anymore. Did that really work or is Leighton still in love with him? Will being in Pine Oak be as awful for Maverick as it used to be or will he have a future in his hometown together with his siblings and the girl he never forgot?

Lost Rider is a sexy romantic story with plenty of moving layers. Maverick built a huge wall around his heart and he constantly tries to push the people who love him away, so they won't be able to hurt him. Being back in Pine Oak is difficult for him, but Maverick wants to make up for the hurt he's caused by leaving his siblings and Leighton behind. His rodeo career left him with enough money, but he has to find something new to fill his time with. My heart ached for both Maverick and Leighton, they went through so much pain because of everything that was done to Maverick when he was a child. He treated Leighton badly, but she can't resist him and when she finally finds out the truth she has no reason to anymore either. I loved their chemistry, their deep emotional connection and the sweet way they treat each other. Their relationship is both hot and tender, which is a great combination.

Leighton is a strong, determined woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 "HEAD OVER BOOTS" STARS!!!!! April 25 2017

Ahhhhhhh, this book this book THIS BOOK! I floved the hell out-of-this-book!!!!! Oh my my Leighton and Maverick gave me life! I loved all the characters and the writing was exceptional. I seriously can't get enough of this book. I want so much more, I desperately NEED more of Leigh and Mav!

Maverick leaves his hometown of Pine Oak, Texas at eighteen to become a professional bull rider. Perusing his dreams is what he's always wanted, but it comes at a price. He leaves his brother and sister behind (also, his father, but I'm not going to get into that. If I do, I'll just rage, he's another story.) And then there's Ms. Leighton Elizabeth James, his calm and his peace. She was the hardest to walkway from.

Ten years later Maverick finds himself back to the place he never thought he'd return to. He didn't leave things right with Leigh when he left, and he sure as hell wishes he can make things right with her. He knows he has a lot of time to make-up, but he just hopes its not too late.

Leigh and Mav were everything I needed. This wasn't just some "I'm sorry for leaving you and pretending I didn't feel what you felt for me. I'm back now, can we just move on?" HECK NO! This was hard-work, talking through everything, getting your hands dirty, digging and clawing through broken glass, accepting what wasn't and putting countless ghosts to bed. And after all that, that's when finally Leigh and Mav were able to breathe and move forward. I hurt with both of them and I shed some tears as well. But the most beautiful thing was how they both healed and were able to find solace in one another. Oh boy and the way they loved each other, these two gave me all the feels!

"When two people are meant for each other sometimes their souls make the moves their brains are too busy analyzing in order to allow to happen."

I know I sound like a broken record, but I! LOVED! THIS! BOOK! I seriously need to hike up my cowboy boots get my bum to Texas and lasso me a cowboy!

Harper, girl you wrote one helluva book. Thank you a million times for giving us Leighton and Maverick!!! I can't wait to read Quinn's book and I hope there's a Clay book in the works. *fingers crossed*

If second chance romance, a spunky firecracker heroine, a smokin' hot cowboy who uses the word darlin' (swoon), a vivacious best friend, and southern gentlemen is up your alley, then this book is for you. I'm telling you, you want to read this book. Strap on, you're in for one helluva ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 'HEAD OVER BOOTS' STARS! April 25 2017

I've been a fan of Harper Sloan for a while now and I've pretty much read all her books, so it was safe to say when I heard she was writing a book about a cowboy, I had to dive in head first- NO questions asked.

Lost Rider did not disappoint. Maverick Davis was the perfect alpha with a touch of brooding and damaged. He'll have you swooning with his Southern drawal and sweet Southern charm.

Then there's Leighton James. The sweet girl next door who falls for her best friend's brother. She's been a part of the Davis' lives since diapers and could never shake the crush she had on Maverick. She's tough, sassy, and independent even through the curve balls that life threw her way and losing her heart to Maverick. She's always remained the same, a true Southern girl to the core making it hard not to love her.

Yet Maverick and Leighton's relationship isn't easy, in fact it's complicated. There's a lot of unsettled tension after 10 years, but regardless their chemistry was so palpable you could feel it through the pages. They healed each other, fixed one another's broken parts, and above all else they loved each other through it all.

This book definitely leaned more towards the contemporary romance genre, but it was still funny, sexy, and full of sweet perfect moments with equally great secondary characters. Bring on Clay and Quinn's stories! I can't get enough of the Davis siblings and I'm dying for their books right MEOW.

If you're looking for a read full of heart, second chances, healing, forgiveness, love, and family, then you must pick this book up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Complex and Very Moving 2nd Chance Western Romance #ComingHome April 25 2017
By April R Symes - Published on

Lost Rider is the 1st book in the new series called Coming Home by the amazing author Harper Sloan.
Lost Rider had me going thru multiple different emotions:: Hope. Anger. Angst. Peace. Forgiveness. And Most of All- Love. That is the theme that runs as a current thru this book. No matter what is going on, love is running throughout.
The main characters in this book are Maverick Davis & Leighton James. Maverick left Leighton 10 years before when they were teenagers, with plans to never come back. Now he is coming home, after too many concussions have taken him off the Rodeo circuit. Maverick has come home to his father’s death and to Leighton hating him. He didn’t remember her looking as sexy as she does now. She was once the only person he could talk to about anything, was one the only person he could share things with and now she doesn't even want to speak to him. WOW Times change. Maverick is determined to make Leighton talk to him ,to see him again but he doesn’t realize the depth of her despair and of her pain which means Maverick has a tough road ahead of him in proving to Leighton that he is home and he is back in her life.
Leighton is a woman who has had a hard road in life. She had this huge love for Maverick which he threw away when she was but 18 years old. It was done in a pretty cruel manner. She has had to grow up, and find her own dreams without the man she loved with her of her heart. When he left her, she was broken, and bruised. Her dreams didn’t come easy and her life didn’t come without fights but she is where she is now in life, by the drive she had to prove something and that was she could be something without him in her life and she is somewhat happy- she has her bakery and she has Maverick’s sister and brother (Quinn and Clay ) in her life as good friends. She doesn’t want him back in town, she doesn’t want him yet a part of her is happy he is back in town yet she fights those feelings.
There are deep and lacerating wounds that have to be healed before they can fully be together and not everything can be avoided which is what this story focuses on. That and what family really is. It’s a story about family and rediscovering those roots and making up for those you hurt. That is what this story also focuses on. Maverick and Leighton’s story will have you grabbing for tissues and rooting for their HEA. Their passion is deep and their love is one heck of a 2nd chance love story. It is so beautiful and the plot is fantastic, but it is written by Harper Sloan so yes, you will get that awesome plot, that beautifully written story. I look forward to reading the stories of Clay and Quinn.

My rating: 4.9 stars ****

5.0 out of 5 stars This beginning of her Coming Home series is a great start to hopefully a long series to come April 27 2017

I wrote this review for the Ordinary Housewife Book Blog

A book you won't soon forget is the first thing that comes to mind as I finish Lost Rider. I have read every book Harper Sloan has ever released so to say I am a fan is an understatement and this new series is another winner. She knows how to write suspenseful stories with gorgeous alpha men. Harper also perfects interweaving characters so you get blissfully wrapped up in a long series of books where all the characters mingle together so well you won't forget them for a very long time.

This beginning of her Coming Home series is a great start to hopefully a long series to come. In the past she has written suspense with lots of rescuing of the heroines and holding your breath to see what happens but this is a slight departure from that. I feel like a lot of books I have read seem to have a bit of fluff and make quick work of plot lines. This story definitely has a great depth to it.

Maverick and Leigh have known each other forever and definitely had a rocky start. The book looks back on them as teenagers and you quickly learn the heartbreak that tore them apart. Maverick is a famous bull rider while Leigh owns a popular Pie Shop. They come back together after awhile of being apart to instant chemistry. Lost Rider is set with a western theme and I have to say I loved it. Harper even named each chapter with a country song and it makes for a great playlist while reading.

While her other books are more action based Lost Rider focuses more on the characters and their struggle to overcome their past. While their is a heavy emphasis on emotion there is definitely a funny side as well as you get to know everyone. I highly recommend you go one click Lost Rider!!

Lost Rider: Coming Home Book 1 by Harper Sloan
5 Star review by Jodi Bird for Mixed Emotions Book Blog

Oh, Harper Sloan, she sucks me in with her sexy as hell characters and doesn’t let me have a moment of rest. I loved this story as will all of Harper’s books. Lost Rider is no exception.

Leighton James has only loved one man her whole life. Even when that man disappointed her and broke her heart. Now twenty-six, Leighton owns her own business and home. Not wanting to be a rancher, Leighton sold most of her family’s land to the Davis’. It helped that Leighton was best friends her whole life with Quinn Davis. The Davis family had always been in Leighton’s life, include Maverick. But Maverick wanted other things from life and those things didn’t include Leighton.

Maverick had it all. He was a rodeo star. He could get any woman he wanted, except for the one girl he really wanted. He lost that when he broke her heart at 16. Now with his rodeo career over, Maverick is going home to get the one thing he’s always wanted, but never let himself have.

I’m so not telling you any more about this amazing book. I love Maverick. He’s back home trying to right his wrongs while fighting the demons that chased him away. Leighton doesn’t want to give her heart back to this man, but sometimes the heart wants what it wants. There is no denying the chemistry between these two, it’s intense and strong. I love the playlist that follows along with this book. The songs were all fitting for each chapter. A couple even making me laugh.

I had the opportunity to read this book through Netgallery. I’m thankful for that opportunity, but I was also able to listen to it via Audible. The Narrators did an amazing job telling this story. They sucked me in from the beginning and didn’t let go. I hope if you have the chance to read or listen to this book, you will.
