Product Description

It was a hell of a long shot....

CIA assassin Fortune Redding is about to undertake her most difficult mission ever—in Sinful, Louisiana. With a leak at the CIA and a price placed on her head by one of the world's largest arms dealers, Fortune has to go off-grid, but she never expected to be this far out of her element. Posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian in a small bayou town seems worse than death to Fortune, but she's determined to fly below the radar until her boss finds the leak and puts the arms dealer out of play. Unfortunately, she hasn't even unpacked a suitcase before her newly inherited dog digs up a human bone in her backyard.

Thrust into the middle of a bayou murder mystery, Fortune teams up with a couple of seemingly sweet old ladies whose looks completely belie their hold on the little town. To top things off, the handsome local deputy is asking her too many questions. If she's not careful, this investigation might blow her cover and get her killed. Armed with her considerable skills and a group of elderly ladies the locals dub The Geritol Mafia, Fortune has no choice but to solve the murder before it's too late.

About the Author

Jana DeLeon grew up among the bayous and small towns of southwest Louisiana. She's never actually found a dead body or seen a ghost, but she's still hoping. Jana started writing in 2001 after attending a funeral, but that's a whole other story. She focuses on murderous plots set deep in the Louisiana bayous and the secrets that lie just beneath the surface of small towns. By day, she writes very boring technical manuals for a software company in Dallas.

I got this at it was free when it was featured in my app for Amazon Free Book of the Day. I hesitated a bit, as it was clearly something for women (I am one, but am a bit wary of things that are only for women). However, I ended up getting it, and I was glad I did. The main character is an oddball CIA operative who has just ended up killing someone she should not have, so she hides in Sinful, Louisiana impersonating the librarian-former-beauty-queen niece of her boss. Except that she hates all things feminine and only reads weapons manuals. In any event, without giving out spoilers, she finds herself embroiled in an old murder, in a town that is downright odd. Definitely not a serious mystery, but one that had me laughing out loud on several occasions, and that felt good....

CIA agent, Fortune Redding isn’t so fortunate when she kills the brother of an arms dealer and is forced to go into hiding. Her boss has come up with a cover for her, though. Fortune’s about to become Sandy-Sue Morrow, a librarian and former beauty queen who has inherited her aunt Marge’s house in the tiny town of Sinful, Louisiana. Fortune is horrified at the prospect of a slower paced life; however, she isn’t there one day before Marge’s dog discovers a human bone behind the house. The victim, Harvey, was one of the least liked individuals in Sinful, and the prime suspect is his abused wife, Marie. When Marie disappears, two geriatric leaders of the Sinful Ladies Society involve Fortune in helping find Marie before the law does.

Louisiana Longshot is a funny, delightful story that also has some depth. There’s plenty of hilarious mishaps, usually while the sheriff is nearby, but there’s a more poignant side as Fortune slowly starts to review her life and wonder if maybe she’s been on the wrong track. The Sinful Ladies and other townsfolk are also quirky and/or likeable.

I often base my reviews not just on the quality of writing, plot structure, or characters, but also on how the book makes me feel while I’m reading. This book triggered so much good feeling that I couldn’t wait to get to pick it up when time allowed. I laughed out loud more than once, which rarely happens with books that are promoted as humorous mysteries.

My only quibble is the lack of suspects over Harvey’s murder. Given that he was so despised the book would have been even better had the author allowed readers to explore more than two suspects. Still, as I said, I really enjoyed Louisiana Longshot and can’t wait to visit Sinful again.

Perfect summer reading, had me laughing out loud at the antics! Fell in love with the characters, nice twists and turns kept me guessing who done it. Have wish listed the rest, fast paced easy reading, totally enjoyable!! Although this is first in a series the story was complete by itself. Only want the others because it was so good I want more!! This would make an awesome movie!!

Expected fluff and nonsense judging by the cover, and it had some, but it was also a story about strong independent women who are loyal to one another. The mystery was couched within the confines and history of a small town called Sinful. The characters are drawn as the kind of people with whom we all would like to share our lives. There is humour and a little slapstick as the story unfolds, but not to the point of silliness. The conclusion was a surprise but it fit the story.

A good read for a rainy afternoon with a cuppa.

Move over Stephanie Plum! Miss Fortune is hilarious. Stuck in a small bayou town, Fortune immediately finds a bone in her backyard and more adventure than the CIA (her employers) ever want to hear about. Two senior citizens help her solve the case, much to the chagrin of the hard-working sherriff. A great read I'd recommend to anyone who likes a funny mystery that's well-paced and mysterious to the end!

I absolutely loved this book!!!! It was fun and funny but also suspenseful. Being the first book in this series, this title holds a lot of surprises and is setting up the whole series. I LOVE this author. I have read a few of the books in this series and they do NOT disappoint in any way. Jana Deleon has written a lot of books and I intend to eventually read ALL OF THEM!!
