Product Description

August Grayson has secretly dreamt of the girl living on his family’s Irish estate since childhoods spent together in Killarney. Now a proper Lord of the British Empire, he knows there's no place for Maeve in his world. Still, if only...

Maeve O’Connor has nothing but her good name, which proves just enough to win a proposal to a good, Irish lad - for whom she feels nothing. Until the wedding, however, she’s in dire straits. Rent on the cottage she and her father share is due, but there simply isn’t the money to pay. Driven to desperation, Maeve hopes Lord Grayson, her childhood-chum-turned-dashing-English-rogue, will prove lenient when she comes seeking clemency.

The temptation presented proves too much, and August offers Maeve a compromise: should she permit him twice as long on each succeeding visit to do whatever he wishes in pursuit of his pleasure, he will consider her rent paid. Starting with a mere five seconds, pulses soon out race the ticking clock, as August’s desires become Maeve’s own. Passion blinds them to the challenges closing in on both the Irish and English fronts, threatening to destroy them both.

Working to bridge that which divides them, tempting fate with each stolen kiss, and torn between desire and obligation, Maeve and August must strive to overcome all and find a love by any measure.

The market of historical romance is saturated with several standards: Regency era ballgowns that fall away due to hands on a pair of muscular arms, attached to a muscular, exposed chest. A Highland moor, a crashing surf, a castle wall, Victorian setting, Gothic setting, Renaissance setting'with (insert swooning woman, brooding man, and their half removed clothing) doing precisely the same thing. Over and over. For years. The stories are often filled with formulaic pose consisting of heaving bosoms, quivering hands, one high family and one family of good name on the bring of ruin.

Romances have captivated mankind for centuries, and someone argue that the endless dance of rising passions and sobering obstacles leave nothing to be new under the sun.

I counter that with the following:
1. A cover that should be on display in an art show.
2. Historical settings well researched.
3. Characters given such aching realism that you can't help but become invested in their lives.

A Love By Any Measure tells the story of Maeve O'Connor and Lord August Grayson against the backdrop of Ireland, England, and Boston with highlighted years in 1866 and 1872. The differences in class are only a fraction of the things that keep Maeve and August from attaining a desire that once came to them in youth. This isn't the common love found in run-of-the-mill stories. The main characters alternate at points in the story who is victim and who is victimized. The people in their lives stand to benefit or fail due to the decisions that they make. Enriching their meetings is a world rich in detail.

Based in Victorian era Ireland,England and U.S. this is a hot romance between a Lord and a peasant girl. Loved the emotional roller coaster ride to their happily ever after. Expect twists and turns to keep you up late into the wee hours. Highly recommend this bittersweet read.

HASH(0x9f091828) out of 5 stars Uneven and without a good payoff Sept. 13 2012

This book could be divided into two parts. The first half of the book involves the time measurement, in which the two lead characters participate in a contract requiring the tenant be at the sexual mercy of the lord for a certain amount of time at each meeting, starting with five seconds and doubling each time they meet again. This is an interesting concept, but I trudged through this part of the book, not finding it as engaging in reality as it looked in the blurb.

The second half of the book begins to get interesting as we get a glimpse of the future and wonder how these characters get to that place and predicament. I do think the author did well in creating suspense. I did not know how everything would be resolved and kept turning pages looking for answers.

The problem with the payoff, as it too often is in this genre, is that *spoiler alert (kinda)* the conflict ends up being one big misunderstanding. Oops, I overheard you incorrectly/misunderstood your motivations, so I acted irrationally, but that's ok, everything is forgiven now. I really hate that plot device. It does a disservice to the reader when you commit time to reading about two people's anguish that could have been avoided has they taken a moment to truly understand their situation.

Lastly, the criticism that drops this book from three stars down to two is that it is completely ludicrous. I'm okay with the suspension of disbelief -- anything from the supernatural to men who are too sensitive and romantic (and rich! and handsome!) to be believed. But I didn't believe for a second that these characters - a poor peasant and a wealthy lord, would make the decisions they do. I found everything implausible in a way that goes far beyond the temporary suspension of disbelief. In the end, it all seemed very contrived.

Lastly, and this is a *SPOILER* I had to put the book down when Maeve agreed to dress as the nanny to accompany her lover and for all intents and purposes her daughter in public. That was so degrading and not at all romantic. Yuck.

HASH(0xb32aff24) out of 5 stars great read!! Nov. 5 2011

Lord August Grayson is back in his family's Ireland home seeing to business. He hasn't been back since his mother's passing when he was young. And ever since then, he has never forgotten his childhood friend, Maeve, who he hurt when he left. But August is not the same caring boy from years before, yet he still yearns for Maeve.

Maeve and her father are in dire straits with a fear of losing their family's cottage. Maeve goes to talk to the Lord's middleman, to ask for an extension on their rent, only to come face to face with August. August suggests a compromise...Maeve and her father can stay in the cottage as long as she presents herself when beckoned. Each visit the amount of time spent together doubles. Maeve remembers the hurt August caused when he left, but her father's health and their home must come first, so she agrees.

With each visit, emotions and unbridled passion become almost too much for both the hard headed English Lord and the strong Irish beauty. Will different upbringings prove to be a barrier for these lovers or will they find that middle ground to have what they both have longed for?

Once I started reading, I couldn't stop and actually read the majority within several hours. I enjoyed the historical aspect and found it intriguing. I was swept up feeling as if I was walking the dirt path up to Shepherd's Bluff right along with Maeve. I adored the well-developed characters and their history with each other. Even though August could be a major pain at times, he was truly caring deep down, and I just loved him. The whole story was beautifully written and kept my interest throughout the entire book. A Love by Any Measure has a brilliant story with an ending you won't even begin to guess.

HASH(0x9e9c721c) out of 5 stars downward shame spiral Aug. 24 2012

The title pretty much says it all. What a downer. I do not know what about this is romantic or enjoyable. The hero and heroine find weak reasons to justify continuing their meetings and are ashamed of each other and ashamed of what they are doing and on and on in a giant puddle of depressing detail. I definitely missed what the majority of the readers found so compelling about this.

HASH(0x9f332d44) out of 5 stars Wonderful Story Feb. 22 2012

I kept hearing what a good book A Love by Any Measure was. I took the chance and when I started reading I was hooked. I must admit that as I read through the table of contents I didn't understand why the timeframe jumped around. But I decided to jump into it and was very glad I did.

August appears to be a heartless Englishman who had no use for the Irish except to work his lands or tend to his home, even though he had the Irish of his mother in him. This attitude he had learned from his father who was an Englishman. But then there was Maeve. The Irish lass he was forced to leave behind so long ago and could not forget. The young girl who stole his heart with the kiss he placed on her lips in his time of grief. The young woman who, he discovered quite to his dismay upon his return to Ireland, was engaged to someone else, someone who could provide for her and her father.

This is a beautiful story of discovery, mistakes, sacrifice, and most of all forgiveness. As you read it you wonder if the ending will be a happy one or if you should prepare yourself for the heartbreak that often accompanies stories like these.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is an avid romance reader.

August, suffers from sever bipolar issues.
One minute he is angry, the next he is crying for hurting his suppose "true loves" feelings.
Make your mind up dude!
Either you hate her or you absolutely love her!
Not to mention the story plot to be ridiculous, she is paying of her rent with her time in his chamber.
Then August thinking that he is doing her a favor goes off and dismisses her as if she were his personal slave, yet no matter how rude he is she still loves him!
August is a sexist pig, who treats her like trash.
Meave has no back bone what so ever!
Don't waste your time or money on a book you will regret reading.
