About the Author
Sonali Suratkar is a Public Health Nutritionist, trained at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is passionate about creating new ways to cook meals that are both nutritious and delicious. She is always happy to share healthy eating and cooking tips. Her website http://quicklydelicious.com and her first self-published book 'Love Thy Legumes' are great resources, packed with delicious recipes and simple ideas to apply key nutritional information on a regular basis. She aims to empower people with practical tools to balance their meals and cook healthy menus for themselves and their families. By doing so, Sonali hopes she can contribute towards curbing the rise of global chronic diseases.

What additionally and uniquely sets LTL apart is that it is a surprise educational cook book as well. The introductory section of the book indulges in healthy cooking and eating practices, meal planning ideas, balanced meal guides, and basic cooking tips which makes for a good leisure read for everyone. This not only promotes health consciousness and healthy eating, but also sets the tone for the book and help understand the recipes and ingredients better.
Last but not the least, every inch of the book speaks highly about author's knowledge, expertise, creativity, hard work, and, above all, her passion and commitment to make difference in the way we eat. LTL would be a staple cook book for Indians and warm invitation to others. My wife and I have personally tried out and savored few recipes and we even found few dishes to feed our toddler son. Its my pleasure to strongly recommend this book to all and one. Heartiest congratulations to Sonali for a job well done!
Even so, it’s not perfect. The target audience of the book is not clear, which leads to inconsistencies in the information presented. I quibble with the title; more accurate would perhaps be, “Adore Thy Dal”. Most importantly, I wish all those pages on Western dietary information and dietary guidelines (which can be summarized in two sentences, “Beans have a lot of vitamins and minerals” and “Eat a variety”) had been about what the Ayurvedic tradition knows about beans. Dried beans are notoriously hard to digest, yet they are a staple of the Indian diet. Every Indian housewife seems to know how to make them not only digestible but also delicious and nourishing. We—especially we people trying to be healthy vegetarians--need to learn these valuable, time-honored techniques. This is what I want to learn from Sonali, and which, in spite of herself?, she has largely shared in the directions of her recipes. (Thank you!)
I love the concept of this book because you can use this book no matter where you live as most of the ingredients are readily available. It is not just a collection of recipes that are just written lists of ingredients and straightforward instructions. No matter what your tastes are in food you're sure to find something appealing in Love Thy Legumes. The book takes the time to cover many legume basics, like how to cook legumes, how to choose the right beans, good equipment for cooking and the nutritional information.
The recipes aren't hard, but they're not 10 minute meals either, readers might have issue with some of the prep involved. It's a very worthwhile investment to learn more about legumes and some of the most nutritious yet comforting cooking around.
