Product Description

Product Description

When American colonists resort to war against Britain and her colonial attitudes, a young couple caught in the crossfire must find a way to survive. Pioneers in the wilds of New York State, John and Lucy face a bitter separation and the fear of losing everything, even their lives, when he joins Butler's Rangers to fight for the King and leaves her to care for their isolated farm. As the war in the Americas ramps up, ruffians roam the colonies looking to snap up Loyalist land. Alone, pregnant, and fearing John is dead, Lucy must fight with every weapon she has.
With vivid scenes of desperation, heroism, and personal angst, Elaine Cougler takes us back to the beginnings of one great country and the planting of Loyalist seeds for another. The Loyalist's Wife transcends the fighting between nations to show us the individual cost of such battles.

About the Author

A native of Southern Ontario, Elaine taught high school and with her husband raised two children until she finally had time to pursue her writing career. She loves to research both family history and history in general for the stories of real people that emanate from the dusty pages. These days writing is Elaine's pleasure and her obsession. Telling the stories of Loyalists caught in the American Revolutionary War is very natural as her personal roots are thoroughly enmeshed in that struggle, out of which rose both Canada and the United States.

A real page-turner. I loved the development of Lucy and John as characters and the suspense that built as the plot went back and forth between their experiences. Based on the life of a young couple on a homestead farm in the wilderness of New York State who remain loyal to Britain during the Revolutionary War, this historical novel humanizes the experiences of ordinary people caught up in national events over which they have no control. There are so many themes in this book; for example, nation building, loyalty, love, duty, evil, nature, hope, despair. This would be a valuable book for a teacher to assign to students to grab their interest in the Revolutionary War as well as for background to the Loyalist roots of Canada. The discussion questions included at the end would be useful for discussion and for suggestions of further research for both students and for book clubs. I look forward to Ms Cougler's next phase of the Garner family's life as they arrive in Canada.

I have always been a fan of historical fiction, and this book did not disappoint. The research and historical facts that went into it were outstanding. The author beautifully combined real, historical facts with vivid fictional characters. I truly cared about Lucy and John and was rooting for them, even from the very beginning. Cougler's descriptive writing brings the reader right there, allowing us to truly immerse into the characters' lives. Lucy & John endured such diverse hardships, but their ongoing strength was inspiring. With such powerful writing, readers are able to grasp what life must have been like during the war and the important role played by everyone - men, women and natives. Everything you ever read in history books becomes more meaningful after reading, 'The Loyalist's Wife'.

The book is a real page turner, and beautifully flowed between Lucy's perspective and John's perspective. Since this book is the first in a trilogy, we have 2 books to look forward to as we continue to follow the story of Lucy & John. I highly recommend this book for both the story and historical content. It's an exciting and powerful journey of hardship, love and perseverance. I look forward to discovering what happens next!

This book caused sleep deprivation. I could not put it down. The plot moved quickly and left me wanting to know what would happen next. The vivid descriptions made for a realistic depiction of the time period - from the smells to the taste to what the world looked like at that time. It is obvious that this book was very well researched down to the smallest details. Most importantly, the characters are captivating and I can't wait for the next book in this series! Congratulations Mrs. Cougler - I hope to read many more of your books in the future.
