Director, Screen Writer, Cameraman, Luc Besson has created a somewhat fanciful sci-fi drama set in current times. The plot line keeps your attention mostly throughout the film with the exception of a few flat scenes. Actress Scarlett Johansson pulls off the challenging lead role quite successfully. All the actors underplay their roles which, in my opinion, was an attempt to strengthen the credibility of the overall story. Morgan Freeman's character is totally believable and masterfully played. Overall, it's a reasonably interesting film depicting the darker side of life and a better tomorrow chemically. The ending was somewhat predictable and as such, a little disappointing. The Blu-ray quality is fine. Special optical effects reminded me of 2001 at one point in the film. That distracting thought, as I viewed it, irked me. To Luc Besson: "Close but no cigar."

I love science fiction when the emphasis is on science. If you love hype, special effects, gadgets, and a slightly different plot, this one has all of that. However, I have a hard time grasping the concept that special abilities such as manipulating time, space and dimension will happen when a person uses more of their brain.

These type of films, of people who suddenly acquire special abilities is not new. The film gave me flashbacks of "The Man with the X-Ray Eyes," "Limitless" "Transcendence", "The Time Machine" and "2001..." just to name a few. There are more.

Lucy is given an experimental drug, CPH-4 that erupts in her abdomen and if you have seen one preview for the film, you know pretty much the whole film and have a good idea where it goes save the details.

PLOT SPOILER: The scene that ties the film together is when she is back in time and meets our ancestor, a man-ape which reminds us of Dr. Leaky's "Lucy." Here, as in the painting of the Sistine Chapter our Lucy extends her finger, like God, to touch the finger of the man-ape. It was as if they created the whole film for this one scene. This was the equivalent of the man-ape touching the monolith in "2001..." Lucy imparts to man an unconscious universal knowledge (Hollywood New Age obsession) as would later be demonstrated with the painting of the Sistine Chapel and Dr. Leaky selecting the name "Lucy" and Faber College of "Animal House" using the phrase "Knowledge is Good" as their school motto.

Unfortunately, the ending dragged on a bit, like a man entering a monolith. I was hoping for more face to face "Kill Bill" type action.

Looks good on the big screen. 3 1/2 stars

Parental Guide: Minor swearing, maybe an F-bomb. No Nudity. Scarlett does get groped.

Lucy arrives on blu-ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 2.40:1 encode. The transfer is simply pristine, with beautifully saturated colourful hues and primaries that pop. Contrast is well balanced with deep, solid blacks. Resolution is excellent with fine details. The visual impact is simply exciting and stimulating. (5/5)

The DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio soundtrack is a dynamic powerhouse, with deep bass. Sound effects are directionalized, accompanied by an intense dynamically engaging music score. Dialogue is clear. This is an immersive soundtrack. (5/5)

The premise of this movie by director/writer Luc Besson is that the average human only uses 10% of one’s brain capacity. Here, Lucy turns into superwoman through a drug using 100% of her brain capacity. One word of advice: when you watch this movie, it is strongly advised to use zero% of your brain capacity. Just enjoy all the action, plus the star and soul of this movie: Scarlett Johansson. (3/5)

1 Lucy has an estimated budget of $40 million, but only grossed $126 million.
2 Like Alfred Hitchcock, director Luc Besson made a cameo appearance as the doctor in the Paris hospital with the other three drug mules arrested, later among those shot by Mr. Jang's gang.
3 Although the scenes in Asia take place in Taiwan, Mr. Jang and his henchmen speak Korean, not mandarin.
4 Lucy's full name is "Lucy Miller" from her passport. Her birthday is March 10th, 1988.

I personally find this movie exciting, full of kiss-ass action by a female superhero. It was originally rumoured that the role was for Angelina Jolie. I think Scarlett Johansson was perfect for this role. If you stop analyzing the plot, you will enjoy this movie much more. Both the video and audio are demos worthy. If you like action, this movie is then highly recommended.

We ended up seeing Lucy because my husband gently persuaded me to see it (this was one of the summer movies that caught his attention). Lucy centers around the plot of a woman named Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) who ends up simultaneously making the best of her remaining life and doing some amazing feats after unexpectedly being given a substance that allows her to use more of her brainpower/potential. She ends up contacting a noted academic (Morgan Freeman) who she knows can help her make sense of what has happened to her. Lucy is also literally on the run for her life because the man and his entourage who spearheaded the distribution of this drug are extremely dangerous and violent people. This is a good movie to watch for those who like films that play with the concept of human potential and the probability of improving on brainpower.
