Lyrics

Talking New York

Ramblin’ outa the wild West

Leavin’ the towns I love the best

Thought I’d seen some ups and downs

’Til I come into New York town

People goin’ down to the ground

Buildings goin’ up to the sky

Wintertime in New York town

The wind blowin’ snow around

Walk around with nowhere to go

Somebody could freeze right to the bone

I froze right to the bone

New York Times said it was the coldest winter in seventeen years

I didn’t feel so cold then

I swung onto my old guitar

Grabbed hold of a subway car

And after a rocking, reeling, rolling ride

I landed up on the downtown side

Greenwich Village

I walked down there and ended up

In one of them coffee-houses on the block

Got on the stage to sing and play

Man there said, “Come back some other day

You sound like a hillbilly

We want folk singers here”

Well, I got a harmonica job, begun to play

Blowin’ my lungs out for a dollar a day

I blowed inside out and upside down

The man there said he loved m’ sound

He was ravin’ about how he loved m’ sound

Dollar a day’s worth

And after weeks and weeks of hangin’ around

I finally got a job in New York town

In a bigger place, bigger money too

Even joined the union and paid m’ dues

Now, a very great man once said

That some people rob you with a fountain pen

It didn’t take too long to find out

Just what he was talkin’ about

A lot of people don’t have much food on their table

But they got a lot of forks ’n’ knives

And they gotta cut somethin’

So one mornin’ when the sun was warm

I rambled out of New York town

Pulled my cap down over my eyes

And headed out for the western skies

So long, New York

It looks impressive, and has many alternate lyrics. It's so heavy, you almost need a pulpit to look at it properly. The dust jacket is like tracing paper, very fragile. Personally, I preferred the little details like Bob's drawings (from Writings & Drawings), and miss the draft lyric sheets (although the random placing of many of them in the previous edition was annoying). This is in the style of a reference book, which accounts for the sleek, unillustrated style (other than the album sleeves - do we need reminding of them?). I haven't had time to look for changes in the text (previous editions had quite a few inacurate transcriptions), but I did notice the book was published before the recent Basement Tapes release (which proports to be complete), so the BT section here only has the handful of extra lyrics featured in previous editions (there are, of course, the 'Lost On The River' lyrics that could have been included too).

A note on shipping: this copy arrived from Canada to UK incredibly quickly. Unfortunately, the only packaging it had was a single, thin card box with some brown paper around the book. The box was at least 40% bigger than the book, which is incredibly heavy, and after moving around during transit, the book sustained some damage to the spine. However, amazon.ca were very happy to offer a discount which meant I paid less than the original UK price (including shipping).

This is certainly not a handy little book you leaf through in bed. It is a grand and monumental tome that looks and feels as heavy, timeless, and gratifying as the words inside. A treasure.

It's a huge book of lyrics. I expected a little more text from Christopher Ricks. I should have received the book in a slip-case but apparently that was some kind of slip up in marketing one book (with slip-case) and selling another. The bobdylan.com site clearly said there was a "slip-case" and showed it in the picture. Will Sony/Amazon fix this or try to ignore it?

Beautifully produced book, if something of a monster to hold. There are fewer annotations than I expected and less from Christopher Ricks than I expected, but nevertheless a wonderful book to have.
