PRAISE FOR THE SWORD OF SUMMER

"The Sword of Summer is a propulsive, kinetic, witty rebooting of Norse mythology with all the charm of the Percy Jackson novels. Instantly likeable heroes! Insane action! Cool villains! PRAISE FOR THE HOUSE OF HADES

"Adventure fans will relish the action as their heroes confront formidable foes, while readers who have come to love the characters will enjoy following the different individuals as they take the stage in scenes that are usually dramatic, often witty, and occasionally surprising. Product Description

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother’s mysterious death, he’s lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.

One day, he’s tracked down by an uncle he barely knows—a man his mother claimed was dangerous. Uncle Randolph tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.

The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.

Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .

Quick Thoughts
1. I'm a little disappointed. This book was A LOT like Percy Jackson. I was hoping the main character would have been different.
2. Other than that the book was pretty good. I liked meeting the characters in Norse mythology.
3. I was hoping the plot would have been a little different. It was still the same typical do a quest or the world will end sort of plot.
4. I liked learning new things about Norse mythology but I think someone who didn't know anything about it would have appreciated it more.

"Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard I: The Sword of Summer," by Rick Riordan, is the first in his new series, this time based on Norse mythology. Magnus is a street kid in Boston, having lived rough since his mother died two years earlier when he was 14 years old. On the day of his 16th birthday, strange things start to happen to him: a strange uncle is searching for him, his two street friends start showing up in odd places, and he learns something important about his past, the identity of his father. Soon, he is sent on a quest, to find his father’s sword, an important tool in the ongoing fight to prevent Ragnarok, the Day of Doom which will lead to the world’s end…. As ever, Riordan is a fun author to read - his books are fast-paced, chock full of action and peppered with adolescent snarkiness and pun-filled wit. I am not as familiar with Norse mythology as I am with the subjects of his earlier series, Greek and Roman myth, but I assume he applied the same level of research in order to be accurate with, especially, the minor characters in the pantheon. This is the first of a trilogy, and I’m already looking forward to Book II! Recommended.

Rick Riordan does it again! I have read his other series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Heroes of Olympus, Kane Chronicles, as well as the companion books, and they never fail to please. I'm happy to say that this book introduces some new, diverse, valuable characters to the Riordan universe, as well as briefly seeing some familiar faces. The story, while a similar formula to his other series (hero is thrust headfirst into a quest), introduces us to a completely new and unique setting. I definitely recommend this series!

My grandson received this book for Christmas He told me it was the best book ever and suggested I read it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's filled with great adventure, interesting characters, zippy dialogue and lots of humour. I found myself laughing out loud. Parents, don't tell your kids, but it's also filled with some great Norse mythology so it's educational too! I purchased a copy for our school library and both my grandson and I look forward to the release of book two in October.

This book is amazing! 5/5!

It's amazing how a 50 year old man can capture the perspective of a 16 year old homeless (and dead XD) boy.

This book is very good because it is really detailed and has lots of Norse history. I like it because it has more or less the same plot as his other stories. My favorite part would be when Magnus went on the island to face the Fairis wolf and defeated the Surt and tied up the wolf. Also, i like his sword jacks power. But, the book started to get lessinteresting when he was in Vahalla. I enjoyed this book alot so you should read it. -Kenny

An excellent new novel from Rick Riordan! Filled with action, adventure and excellent characters, this book will definitely leave you wanting more, just as the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus did. It really makes you want to learn more about Norse mythology and it's so much fun to read!

This Norse mythological book is written incredibly well because it didn't rush to get into the other realms (staying on Midgard or Earth) with homeless Magnus Chase before he found the Sword of Summer and had to fight Surt, the Fire Giants King.
