I was expecting more ideas for make ahead meals. Casseroles to pop in the freezer then take out and bake on busy days. Crock pot meals I could prep ahead of time and pull out of the freezer and turn the dial and go kind of deal on a busy morning. Most of these appear to be 'you can mix the dry ingredients the night before' and just add the wet in the morning which I can do with many recipes from countless books really. Not what I was hoping for, although I am dying to try the butter chicken recipe, along with some others, just not what I thought it would be.

I own a lot of Michael Smith's books and I like this one the least. It feels like a rushed contractual obligation where he left his best stuff in his previous books. There is really nothing time saving about this book. The recipes are require lots of grocery shopping, and lots of work. Even reading through some of the recipes are time consuming. For the San Marzano Marinara Sauce one of the instruction reads "Open each can of preserved sunshine and pour through your fingers into the pot, crushing the tomatoes with your hand into smaller, rustic pieces" and it continues on like that. Some people really like that kind of writing and that's fair, but it does not fit the book's theme of time saving.
I must mention the pictures (or how the pictures were printed). The food looks dry and unappetizing. I challenge you to look at the picture for the Tortilla Quiches and tell me you could eat that without a glass of water. The Amazing Morning Microwave Muffins looks like a bad pinterest recipe. Maybe the photographer did the best he could but is not a magician.
I try to borrow from the library before I buy and I was the first on the list for this one, but it's going back and I will pass on this one and probably the next few.

I love Michael Smith's cook books and have purchased all but one. While many of the recipes in this book look delicious, they were not the 'make ahead' meals I was anticipating. Most of the recipes have 'time saving' components to them. However it's only a time saver in order to help finish the fresh recipes faster. I have to admit I was expecting to see more things I could freeze and eat later. So, while you will see lasagna and shepherds pie and muffins... There are mostly fresh recipes with a few make ahead 'time saving' steps. I would suggest borrowing a copy from your local library before purchasing this one to be sure it meets your expectations.

I love the recipes Chef Smith has to offer. many of the suggestions I can depend on to be tasty and easy to put together. If I have any ideas to add or change the recipe I can do that. Chef Smith has been so good sharing his health conscious recipes I know I can depend on the end product being good.
