An excellent survey of the key developments leading to the construction and first use of the atomic bomb. Very well written, with scholarly qualities of research. Passages on the developments in physics from about 1900 were a bit beyond me, but will no doubt satisfy the more scientifically-literate. I was especially interested in his review of the lengthy and tortured process (three months) by which Hiroshima and Nagasaki were finally selected for bombing. More detailed context might have been added, but this was not the main subject of this 800-page tome, so...

I didn't know what to expect but I found this a dry read. I struggled and tried but I could not finish. BUT, for someone wanting to know about who, what, when, and why, this has it with dates and detail. I guess I was looking for more of a literary experience than information.

The comprehensive history of the Manhattan Project

Rhodes' tome is, as far as I can tell, the best, most comprehensive history of the Manhattan Project. It's another ~800 page project, but full of interesting vignettes, including how the demand for an unconditional Japanese surrender was more or less an accident and how spontaneous fission measurements taken at high altitudes were unknowingly biased by higher cosmic ray fluxes, throwing off some fission calculations for several years.
