Product Description

Matt Carter, self-proclaimed sex-god and drummer for world renowned Souls of the Knight, didn’t have the time or inclination for planning his future, preferring to fill his days with music, women and alcohol. He didn’t want or need anything else in his life.

Until the band parted ways and he found himself no longer living the dream.

Bored and lonely, with too much time and money on his hands, Matt turns to his best friend, Alex Clark, to help devise a new direction to take his life in. Together, they embrace their newfound venture, as owner and manager of one of L.A.’s hottest gay clubs – Kaleidoscope. For the first time, Matt has a plan. He knows where life is heading.

Until a devastating phone call turns his whole world upside down, sending him straight into the comforting arms of his best friend and leading him to doubt everything he’s ever known or believed about himself.

Alex had always been content with his unrequited feelings for his rockstar friend, but as Matt starts to question if he might actually feel the same, he runs as fast as his feet will allow.

Has Matt gone too far? Has his reputation as an irresponsible womanizer who refuses to take life seriously, finally managed to push his best friend away for good?

Or is Alex hiding secrets of his own?

(M/M romance. Not suitable for under 18’s due to language and sexual content.)

HASH(0xa7b3a048) out of 5 stars Being stuck in a box with a label slapped onto it doesn’t mean jack... Oct. 29 2015

The Making of Matt by Nicola Haken is one of those books that has just about everything you could want, including a wicked sense of humor and smoking hot sex. It is the third book in Haken’s Souls of the Knight series.

Matt Carter was the drummer in the band, Souls of the Knight, and since the band broke up he’s been without direction.

He screws and drinks his way through life, with his best friend Alex at his side to make sure he doesn’t get into too much trouble.

Most days, Alex Clark forgets that his best friend is a famous rockstar. He sees Matt’s giant heart hidden behind his foul mouth, and somehow he ended up falling in love with the very straight and perpetually womanizing drummer.

Matt is the friend that everyone loves but at the same time is constantly annoyed with. He has absolutely zero filter for his mouth and liberally sprinkles everything he says with colorful insults and cuss words. It provides for very entertaining reading.

I love how Nicola Haken wasn’t afraid to handle a difficult subject in this book. I don’t want to spoil things for anyone, but Haken chose to shed light on an issue within the LGBTQ community that hardly ever gets discussed in romances and I have to give her mad props for that.

My absolute favorite parts in this book were the interactions between Matt and Ryder. The snark flows heavily between them and I was laughing my ass off. Everything about the waxing scene was hysterical.

“Without him, I would break into so many pieces I doubted I’d ever be able to put myself back together.” This is how Matt feels about Alex and it’s one of dozens of passages that I highlighted. Haken’s writing was so on point in every way.

Despite having never felt attraction for another man before, Matt embraced his feelings with his usual abandon. To him, being stuck in a box with a label slapped onto it doesn’t mean jack. All he knows is that Alex makes his heart smile.

It isn’t all Easy Listening (heh, see what I did there?). Alex has secrets and Matt is the least qualified person ever to be in a relationship.

Luckily, they have great friends—especially “Uncle Sawyer”—to give them swift kicks to the ass when their heads get stuck up there.

Haken hit all the right notes with this one. Matt and Alex are perfect for each other and absolutely worth falling in love with. The two of them face real obstacles but their commitment to each other allows them to overcome each one. I definitely recommend this one!

When I got to the end of the book and read the acknowledgments, I saw that Matt was never supposed to have a story, but so many readers asked for it, that Nicola felt compelled to write it. So to my fellow fans of this series and this author, thank you for requesting Matt, and Nicola, thank you for writing his story. This was my favorite story in the series by far, and Matt is definitely one of my top 5 favorite characters of all time. I adored his no nonsense snarkyness. His attitude, which if taken seriously makes him sound conceited and full of himself. The ultimate Rock God, but he came off as hilarious and with a heart as big as Texas!

Alex, well Alex is just a saint for putting up with Matt's crap. But it's Matt, so you can't help but fall in love with him. Alex was sweet and adorable. I loved his character, and I loved that even with the sweetness, he could give as good as he got, from Matt!

The chemistry and sexual tension between Alex and Matt was palpable. I loved that Matt took being attracted to his best friend, a man so well. Not to say he didn't have a problem with it, but I loved that he embraced his feelings.

I enjoyed getting to see all the old band mates and Elle again. Even though the band is no longer together, these guys and their significant others are still a tight knit family. Because even though there may not be blood shared they are what families are made of. The people who don't abandon you, who stand behind and beside you and support you every step of the way. I know from experience that sometimes friends can be much closer family than your blood relatives.

This was a quick paced book. It moved along and kept me hanging on to every word. Matt's antics kept me in stitches for much of the book. This was an easy read, with just a tad bit of angst thrown in. Enough to make the story not feel too syrupy sweet.

Highly recommended and I can't wait for more of Nicola's work in the future!

HASH(0xa7b3a4d4) out of 5 stars Enjoyable read Oct. 22 2015

I love the Souls of the Knight Series. Being Sawyer Knight and Taming Ryder were wonderful books that I loved. I was very excited to read the third installment in this series. The Making of Matt brings back all of the wonderful characters and centers on Matt and Alex. Matt, the former drummer of Souls, is floundering after the band breaks up. Matt's best friend, Alex vows to help Matt find a new purpose in life.

Matt soon finds himself attracted to Alex. Alex has wanted Matt for most of their friendship. They fall into an easy relationship and quickly into love. Some speed bumps along the way prove to be only minor obstacles in their relationship.

Spoiler alerts:

When Alex tells Matt he's HIV positive, it takes very little for Matt to accept this and decide to proceed with his relationship with Alex. They fall quickly in love, sex comes natural to Matt despite Alex being his first and really their biggest problem is Alex being intimidated by Matt's stardom and both men being too immature to talk about their problems.

I think the HIV positive status is a little too glossed over and their sexual relationship should have been a bigger deal. Also, both men are old enough to know that communication is key to any relationship and should have learned after the first time or two rather then needing Sawyer to constantly intervene.

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the others in the series.

HASH(0xa7b3a894) out of 5 stars Matt's story is All kinds of AWESOME Oct. 19 2015
By KathyMac Reviews - Published on

I love Souls of the Knight and I was thrilled when I learned we would be getting Matt’s story. Nicola Haken has knocked, The Making of Matt, out of the park. There is everything that I love reading about in this book.

From friends to lovers, hot and passionate sex, laugh out loud moments that catch you off guard, causing those around you to lift an eyebrow waiting for you to fill them in, and emotion. So much emotion in this book. One minute you will be cracking up and the next, tears will be pouring down your face.

Matt is struggling with his life after the band stops touring. Music, sex, alcohol, and women are all the things Matt loved and now that he doesn’t have that, he finds himself in limbo. He wants to have something to focus on, give his life meaning, have purpose, so with Alex’s help, that’s the plan.

“The rest of the guys have all found someone. They’re pursuing new paths. I need to do something, Alex. Give myself purpose again.”
— Matt

However, life has a way of upsetting plans and Matt has an emotional and devastating blow that causes his world to fall apart. He reaches for the bottle but thank goodness he has true friends that gather around him for support. Friends who help him put his life into perspective and stand beside him through his ups and downs.

Alex has always loved Matt, but he knew a relationship between them would never happen. One reason is because Matt is straight and another reason, one that no one is aware of, Alex has had his own devastation in life which he keeps to himself.

Matt finds himself thinking about Alex, his eyes, his a**, at very inopportune moments. He doesn’t understand why he’s thinking about him, in that way, he’s never ever been attracted to another man, till now.

Taking the plunge Matt kisses Alex, but the only thing it accomplished was sending Alex running and putting Matt into a tailspin. Matt reaches out to Sawyer for help and advice so together they work out a plan to get Alex back.

Being with Alex brings everything for Matt into focus. Where he should be scared, nervous, he’s not… he’s content. Alex worries about these new feelings Matt is having becoming too much, but Matt isn’t concerned about others or what they think. I was so proud of Matt for becoming the man he was meant to be. He was looking for purpose, and Alex gave him that.

He knows what he wants and boy, oh boy, did he go after it. Matt and Alex are made for each other and they complimented each other very well. Alex has had so many walls up around his heart, for his own reasons, but to see them crumbling down, laying himself bare for Matt, is breathtakingly beautiful.

They are so hot together, and no matter where they are, their sexual chemistry and the connection they share will have you breathing faster than normal. I’m not saying I did this, but you may find yourself reading over those scenes just to make sure you didn’t miss anything.

“Right now, my only focus was on the stunning man trembling in front of me. The knowledge that I was bringing him closer and closer to the edge with each flick of my tongue, each pump of my fist, was more exhilarating than any orgasm I’d every experienced.”
— Alex

I love how all the characters that I’ve loved from the first two books are very prominent in Matt’s book. Catching up with Jake and Sawyer was absolutely the icing on the cake and having Ryder and Mason hanging around was another bonus. Especially Ryder, who had me laughing so much and so hard my eyes watered.

One of the best parts in the book is Ryder taking Matt to the spa. The author absolutely nails the emotions and reactions so f^*king perfectly that I literally could see them and feel them. The descriptions and details were spot on giving the reader one heck of a vision. Every time I think about what happened, I start laughing all over again.

Some of the other secondary characters I could have done without. I gotta say, I am not a fan of Ashley and Adam. As a matter of fact, I hated them, and wanted to slap both of them on more than one occasion.

More proof of how well the writing is in this story. Nicola was able to pull so many emotions from me with her descriptive narrative that I felt like I was right there.

Matt’s story is amazing on many levels and I would definitely encourage you to read the series in order. The author does a great job of introducing the side characters, however, the back story is definitely worth reading. Knowing what the other couples have gone through and where they are now is so good for the soul.

The Making of Matt is an emotional journey, not only for Matt, but for the reader, as well. The author captures their feelings incredibly well and pulls you into the story from the beginning. Not only is the writing superb, but the humor is off the charts funny, and it all equates to one heck of a good story.

Read the whole series, you won’t be disappointed, and you definitely needs these guys in your life. Thank you Nicola Haken for sharing these amazing people with us.

HASH(0xa7b3a978) out of 5 stars Beautiful friends to lovers Oct. 18 2015

The Making of Matt is Book # 3 in Souls of the Knight Series by Nicola Haken and it is absolutely my favorite book in this series omg how I love Matt.

Matt Carter has been living his life bored and mostly lonely ever since the split of their band although he still sees his band mates which he considers his family there is something missing.

Alex Clark is best friends with Matt he looks up to him and is hiding a very important secret.
Together these two will have you laughing in stitches the banter between them is hysterical and also have your readers melting with the scorching sex scenes: and Alex is the only one who can somehow keep Matt somewhat stable.

I really loved how we get another look into Matt's personality and how he leans on his best friend Alex for support and venturing into a new journey in his life. Also the relationship he has with his mom is so endearing and we also get some laughs there too.

Watching these two develop into more than just friends is such a beautiful journey Nicola Really wrote this so brilliantly I loved the flow and the GFY aspect from best friends to lovers.

This story also will have you in tears at one point but it's so well done and fits right in and it shows so much growth and trusting between these best friends.

Nikola dealt with a very sensitive subject that effects millions daily but she did it with such grace, it shows with research, patience, love , and understanding love will prevail. Thank you so much for this beautiful story I can't recommend this enough.

Oh and be prepared to laugh your A*^ off at one of my favorite funniest scenes "at the spa"
