Product Description

Review

"These essays establish Medine as not just a fashion wunderkind, but a clever and engaging storyteller who's not afraid to laugh at herself." --Publisher's Weekly

"...the utterly likable Medine comes across vividly and sincerely in writing what she loves." --Booklist

"In a strong, consistent narrative voice, Medine displays wit, unabashed openness and a knack for weaving seemingly superficial, materialistic details into essays that are rich with sly wisdom and the colorful personalities of family members and friends. Humorous, insightful and sometimes-sparkling essays that will appeal to readers interested in the pure fun of fashion." --Kirkus Reviews

"Not only do I agree with how Leandra dresses, but I also agree with everything she says in these brilliant stories. She's a terrific writer." --Joan Rivers

"Leandra is a sick, twisted fashion addict and guess what? There is no rehab. As this book shows, she is doomed to be stylish and groovy and hilarious for the rest of her life." --Simon Doonan, Barneys New York ambassador and author of The Asylum

"Leandra wears her wit as well as she wears her denim bib overalls. But at being repellent, she is a colossal failure." --Laura Brown, Executive Editor, Harper's BAZAAR

"Through Leandra's growing pains and dating disasters, MAN REPELLER reminds you that your outfit always plays the best supporting role in your life." --Kelly Oxford, New York Times bestselling author of Everything is Perfect When You're a Liar

"A classic love story of a girl and her clothes, Leandra Medine's MAN REPELLER is as funny, smart, and adorable as she is." --Julie Klam, New York Times bestselling author

I have to admit, it is my own fault for not checking the blog before buying the book but i did not enjoy this book one bit. I can normally read anything but i could not finish this book. Although it is well written, the recollection of a Jewish teenager's awkward years just comes off as annoying. There is a full chapter on her having her period for her first time... maybe if you are 15 and reading this, you can relate but i'm 45, and cannot relate to these childish stories.

I had read several reviews of this book stating Medine outlined the relationship she (and many women) have with clothes and important events in their lives. The reviews noted it was comic and funny- not so. Some of her comments made me smile but that's it. Passed it on to others and got the same response. Her style might work better in her blog than as a book.

Witty and wonderful. Wish it were longer but loved all the essays in Leandra's book. A quick and funny read.

HASH(0xa15d68e8) out of 5 stars Couldn't relate April 7 2014
By Toni Campbell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
The Man Repeller was probably the first hugely popular fashion blog. I was an intermittent reader at best because, even though her aesthetic didn't appeal to me, the concept of embracing your personal style even if it repels men was kind of funny. This is not a style guide, but rather a fashion biography of sorts where Medine uses articles of clothing as chapter titles and jumping off points to tell the high points (mainly surrounding love) of her life thus far.
Her sometimes wacky "I Love Lucy" style anecdotes that take her from her first crush in elementary school to joining the adult job market are at once endearing and annoying in a Carrie Bradshaw kind of way. Medine's clear devotion to fashion are what kept me reading long after I decided that I couldn't relate to her at all.

I love this book. I love her wittiness and and humor. I love the clever and fresh approach she has on fashion. I wanted to become a fashion blogger at some point but played with the idea but, She really made me seriously consider the notion. This is a classic for sure. I also received it super fast. Thanks

It was funny and interesting, not the most compelling book I've ever read but quick and fun. Fashion lovers and fans of her blog will like it but I didn't loooove it.

I'm a huge fan of Leandra's blog. So, when the opportunity came to review her book, I jumped at it. While parts were funny and relatable (which is why I love her blog), the book left something to be desired. Unfortunately, I can't pinpoint exactly what "something" is, but I can say that you'll enjoy many of the anecdotes and empathetically cringe at times. I don't think the book is worth buying for more than 4.99 on Kindle though.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

HASH(0xa18bba20) out of 5 stars Love it, love her Feb. 13 2014

I didn't know much about her before this book. Now I think she is brilliant and hilarious. I saw her out once while I was reading it and didn't have the guts to tell her (mostly because I had just read intimate details about the loss of her virginity) but I wish I had told her I think she's a genius.
