Product Description

From Amazon

Newly revised to conform with the Chicago Manual of Style, Turabian's Manual for Writers provides comprehensive, detailed, superior guidance to writers of research papers. From "Parts of the Paper" (including the niceties of copyrights and dedications) to "Sample Layouts," everything to do with format is covered. Mechanics of style (abbreviations to quotations) are reviewed, there's help on tables and illustrations, and chapters on bibliographies, parenthetical references, note taking, and citations. There are suggestions for manuscript preparation, hints on word-processing software, and formatting for research papers' more complex features. When you're up to your eyebrows in research data, it's a vast relief to have quick, accessible, reliable answers to your questions of structure, scholarly propriety, and academic style. --Stephanie Gold

From Booklist

A mainstay in high-school and college libraries for nearly 60 years, Turabian has now been updated to incorporate references to the fourteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style [RBB O 1 93]. Founding author Turabian died in 1987; this edition was revised by John Grossman and Alice Bennett, who edited the most recent edition of The Manual of Style. The arrangement of the book remains the same. Chapters 13 and 14 show the ubiquity of computers. It is assumed that students now write their papers on a PC; typewriter users are referred back to the previous edition. The documentation chapters tell how to cite CD-ROM and online sources, and the bibliography at the end of the book has been updated. However, much of the book is unchanged. Librarians will want to see what kind of condition their 1987 edition of this book is in when deciding whether to purchase this new one. Sandy Whiteley --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is one of my favorite books. Okay, yes, I admit it, I'm a nerd. But I'm a nerd that did very well on all of my college papers because I knew the proper tabulation of a footnote.
It is essentially an abridged version of the Chicago Manual of Style, for prose writing. Most of the CMS is pretty useless for what most people deal with, and I personally think it's hard to find anything in. Turabian, on the other hand, is a concise little paperback that offers information that no online service can compete with.
If you're going to buy one reference book for college, this should be it. Forget the dictionary, forget the thesaurus: they come with Microsoft and you can find perfectly good ones online. Turabian is all you'll need in life. Call it "Turabian" too, as in "I was looking through my Turabian last night, and it says to use the Oxford comma" and you'll instantly impress all of your professors, graduate with honors, and be accepted to the med school of your choice.

The 6th edition, the latest edition, is a required guideline for many students at the university level. However, it is also a necessary guide to follow in order to publish articles in many current journals, periodicals, and scholarly texts. Thus, it is safe to say that this guideline is a must. However, this book, while it is formatted for "easy" use, is often times not at all easy to use. My biggest complaint is that many of the mechanical guidelines that are similar are not grouped together in this text and that means you have to go hunting through the book to find the exact place for certain "lone rules." The book itself needs to be updated further so it will include the latest in computer technology (i.e. the World Wide Web, etc.) All in all, it is helpful in many ways (i.e. citations, bibliography, notes, etc.) How can you not recommend a standard text/guideline that is required in university all over the U.S.?

I recommend this to anybody who wants a great manual, but it is most relevant for college students, and perhaps those with even more education, although I would assume that they would get an even more detailed manual. The book has many chapters, but the chapters that make this book great are the chapters on citations. If you are interested in how to use commas or abbreviations this book has that, but there are better, easier books out there. However, if you want a quick, easy reference for Chicago Style citations this book is great. Almost every question you could possibly have about a citation will be answered by the books attention to detail. Like others have said in their reviews, the book doesn't do a good job with electronic information. Still, the book is worth buying. This book is great. Buy it now.

If it was allowed this book would have a negative star rating. Use this book only if you have the time to take a full semester course on navigating Turabians antiquated and contorted layout. The author died in 1987. It's impossible to use. It is confusing, and when it contains information you need, it is well hidden. Find something else and save hours of study time! I've struggled through two term papers because my school demands its use. As much time was spent searching the Turabian book for answers as was spent on researching the term paper subject!

Turabian's book is an absolutely essential resource for any college undergraduate or graduate student that wants to produce quality papers. There's a reason this book is a "classic" work assigned in many English and other humanities classes for many years, it covers nearly everything from the posessive of Jesus to how to cite book chapters to format footnotes and tables of contents.
I do agree that the book does need to be updated to include internet resources, hopefully this will be done in a new edition soon.

I have been using the Terabian style book for about ten years. Though Kate Terabian passed away several years ago, her legacy lives on in her style book. The book is well-organized, and covers every question I have ever had regarding punctuation, formatting, and style. The proliferation of examples is what makes it easy to use. I would recommend it, especially for serious academic writers, both students and teachers. The only caution I have is that a casual writer may find it too technical.

As a new graduate student I found myself overwhelmed by the requirements of the standard research paper. Having little knowledge of the proper way to reference and list bibliographies, I went to the local library for help. The librarian suggested Turabian's book. Needless to say I took her advice and brought the book home with me. I found this book to be an invaluable tool. So much in-fact that I decided to purchase a copy for myself. No student library is complete without this book.

This is every professor's love no matter what university or college you go to. The Sixth Edition is defintely not up to date considering it was published in 1996.
There are no internet citation guide. Much of the manual is not well identified. You have to use the index more than anything just to find the information you need.
Unfortuantely this is the "bible" guide for a university.
