“The best of the best [business books] are often written by the masters themselves, not as investment advice per se, but as autobiographical works. They explain how the writers think, which in turn explains how they invest. That’s why Market Masters is so engaging.” ― Toronto Star
“Robin Speziale has interviewed Canada’s top money managers in depth. But instead of asking what stocks they like ― ‘the flavour of the month’ ― he talked to them about the processes they use to find investable securities.” ― Ellen Roseman, personal finance expert and Toronto Star business columnist
“First-class interviews of successful investors sharing a diverse range of sound investment philosophies. Robin Speziale and his interlocutors remind us that Canada is rich with financial savvy and business acumen.” ― Lawrence A. “Only a few investors become great, and they take different paths to get there. For an investor who wants to be successful, this book provides not just the recipe that these investors used to reach success, but also insight into their beliefs, blind spots, and investment philosophies. I recommend it to those who want to get past cookbook models and develop their own ways of thinking about markets and investing.” ― Aswath Damodaran, professor of corporate finance and valuation at New York University’s Stern School of Business, and author of Damodaran on Valuation

Emotional buying and selling are a huge tax on investment returns. O’Shaughnessy, author of What Works on Wall Street

Most books have their biases due to practical considerations of length and no author can be an expert in all areas, this book is no different. As the cover states, this book is for investors, all content is focused on the long term, there’s nothing for day traders or swing traders here.
There’s minimal coverage of technical analysis, but the book is chocked full of fundamental analysis. Very little content exists for CFDs, currencies, futures, or options. Next to no coverage is given to the Venture Exchange or Montreal’s derivatives exchange. A moderate level of market knowledge is required by the reader, those interviewed don’t tailor their responses to beginners. This book deserves its positive review, but if you’re looking for information on day trading, technical analysis, swing trading, or security types beyond stocks and ETFs, then look elsewhere.
While America has a healthy supply of financial authors, Canada’s under covered market is lucky to have someone like Robin Speziale. Just as Jack Schwager authored multiple editions in his Market Wizard series, so too should Robin with a Market Masters series.
It's not an "How to" book, it's a bunch of good interviews with successful investors telling you how they see it (investing) and the rest is up to you !
It's a book that really deserve to be read more than once !
The book has a great format. Each chapter provides the reader with key terms, and the chapters are organized into the investment themes that the individual interviewees follow. Moreover, I love that the book focuses on Canadian investors (many of whom would be familiar to anyone who watches BNN's Market Call or Market Call Tonight). The interview format allows for a magazine-style reading experience that is just as enjoyable the second time through. Also, like a magazine, the reader can focus on their areas of interest rather than reading the book from start to finish.
Whether you are a novice investor with shares in a few companies, a prospective first-time stock purchaser, or an experienced investor, Market Masters is a great book to add to your library.
Definitely recommending it to others.
There was advice at the beginning of the book to say re-read parts and annotate the book, I really agree with that advice there is a lot in this book so definitely will be doing this! It's also great cause you get so many different strategies in one book!
One criticism is that cause it was so thick (although not sure whether anything should be cut) it won't fit on the magazine holder at the gym, so I had to read it while commuting, which was annoying as I like to bring a book (if its good) everywhere until I am done.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in learning more about how the pros manage money. I think there is something in here for everyone; from the beginner on up.
I was able to glean at least something from each of the 28 "Market Masters".
This book combines the best of a value investment (600 pages for 21 CAD) and a growth opportunity (several styles profiled are very profitable).
Great job Robin. Looking forward your next book!
