Format: Hardcover
I thoroughly enjoyed this Masterwork edition which contains Uncanny X-men issues from #151-159 along with Annual #5 and Avengers Annual#10.Some highlights of the collection:The White Queen and Storm switch bodies,Storm and Cyclops develop a deeper friendship as well as a rivalry,Tigra,Spider Woman#1,and Carol Danvers show up.Plus readers meet Rogue for the first time. There is plenty of action but as is the case with Claremont stories there is good character development going on at the same time. These issues are really expensive and hard to find in their original printings plus even the Classic X-men reprints are becoming scarce. With this collection it's all neatly gathered for you at a decent sale price.Claremont's writing is still very good here, this is a collection for Storm fans in particular, she really begins to come into her own as leader of the X-men.Also,Carol Danvers traumatic experiences are dealt with in a sensitive manner in these issues, you can also see how Rogue has been brainwashed and warped by Mystique who has a climactic showdown with Carol.I highly recommend this set to fans and casual readers who have the other masterworks X-men collections.

HASH(0x9da61018) out of 5 stars Claremont at the top of his game March 20 2011
By Jim Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is a strong Masterworks volume. Chris Claremont was in career form as scripter and the late Dave Cockrum was in his second tour as the X-Men penciler. There are some memorable stories in this book. The introduction of Rogue, Kitty's fairy tale, the Brood are introduced, a rematch with the Hellfire Club, and the former Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers is a looming presence in the whole volume. There are two first rate annuals (Avengers 10, X-Men 5) before the annuals were ruined by big events and crossovers. There is also one substandard story as the X-Men meet Dracula.

Masterworks editor Cory Sedlmeier deserves great credit for bringing us a great volume of nearly 300 pages all wonderfully reproduced. There are a few pages of original art extras and a reproduction of the cover of the Crazy magazine X-Men parody issue.

The X-Men would later become so convoluted as to be impenetrable but that lay in the future. This one is highly recommended.
