From Publishers Weekly
The chunky second volume in bestseller Joyce's de Warenne Dynasty series (after The Prize) dances on slippered feet, belying its heft with spellbinding dips, spins and twists. Jane Austen aficionados will delve happily into heroine Elizabeth "Lizzie" Fitzgerald's family, with its three sisters, socially obsessed mama and indulgent father. Lizzie has long loved Tyrell de Warenne, heir of the local earl, but never suspects he knows of her existence until he arranges a rendezvous with her at a masquerade. A switch in costumes sets Lizzie's loose sister in Tyrell's arms instead, resulting in a baby boy. When Lizzie claims the child as her own to save her sister's reputation, she again puts herself in Tyrell's sights. Joyce's tale of the dangers and delights of passion fulfilled will enchant those who like their reads long and rich, though some may find the secondary characters more compelling personalities than the somewhat conventional protagonists.

Even though the kind, handsome nobleman provides the perfect inspiration for her childish dreams of romance, deep down Lizzie knows that Tyrell, the heir to the Earl of Adare, would never marry a poor, plump, bookish girl like herself. Several years later, however, it seems as though her romantic dreams might be coming true when Lizzie encounters Tyrell at a masquerade ball, and he proposes a midnight tryst. Circumstances prevent Lizzie from showing up, but two years later, when they meet again, Lizzie is still hopelessly in love. The only difference is that now Tyrell has the power to separate her from the one person she loves as much as the sexy nobleman: his young son, Ned. Joyce continues her de Warrene Dynasty series with a passionate tale of two lovers caught up in a web of secrets, deceptions, and lies. Readers who love the bold historicals by Rosemary Rogers and Kathleen Woodiwiss will find much to savor here. John Charles

Lizzie Fitzgerald has love Tyrell de Warenne for as long as she can remember. This dashing knight once saved her life as a child and that one meeting was enough to carve a space in this gentle girl's heart. Although part of the genteel population, Lizzie's family is not as well set as many and as a result the idea of Lizzie ever being able to marry her Tyrell is outside the realms of possibilities. Still Lizzie will hold on to her dream of her love for as long as she can. When she's invited to a masquerade ball at the estate of Adare she and her family attend having no idea that this will be the event that will change both Lizzie and Tyrell's life forever.
Two years later Tyrell still can't get over the feelings that he has for the plain but sweet Lizzie Fitzgerald. Imagine his surprise when she and her parents arrive on his doorstep with his son. According to her parents Lizzie is the mother and he is the father. How can that be? Still, Tyrell does what he must but the fact that he had a fiancee and she is just the person he needs to marry in order to assure the future for Adare means nothing once he tastes Lizzie's lips. Will he be able to set aside Lizzie and do right by his duty or will a love that can't be denied win all?
This was an engrossing tale. Ms. Joyce has vividly brought to life the de Warenne family and Tyrell has grown to become a remarkable man. Tryell and Lizzie's romance is truly romantic, as well as heart-breaking but they get their happy ever after!Read more ›

Nevertheless, I will not hesitate to read another romance by Brenda Joyce and I look forward to hearing more about Rex, the crippled brother. In fact, I plan to order "The Prize" as soon as my review here is done. My advice is read the book and judge for yourself.
Later it reveals that Anna is pregnant and finally tells that it's Ty's...I just don't get Lizzie's reaction. I would expect her to be much angrier than she was. Anna was spoiled and cared about nothing but herself and it showed. She didn't think about Lizzie's feelings and went so far as to say that her (Lizzie's) feeling for Ty would never be returned so could she forgive her...Ugh!
Maybe I am just spoiled on certain plots but I just couldn't enjoy the story knowing that Anna slept with Ty and had his baby. I found myself hoping that the baby wasn't his just because it put such a damper on the story....it may be someone else cup of tea but not mine. I'm afraid this will be my last book from this author...thank god I only paid 49 cents for it or else I would have really felt cheated.
