A mermaid’s supernatural beauty serves one purpose: to lure a sailor to his death.

The Massacre is supposed to bring peace to Eriana Kwai. Every year, the island sends its warriors to battle these hostile sea demons. Every year, the warriors fail to return. Desperate for survival, the island must decide on a new strategy. Now, the fate of Eriana Kwai lies in the hands of twenty battle-trained girls and their resistance to a mermaid’s allure.

Eighteen-year-old Meela has already lost her brother to the Massacre, and she has lived with a secret that’s haunted her since childhood. For any hope of survival, she must overcome the demons of her past and become a ruthless mermaid killer.

For the first time, Eriana Kwai’s Massacre warriors are female, and Meela must fight for her people’s freedom on the Pacific Ocean’s deadliest battleground.

I love all things mermaids and thats what initially intrigued me about this book. Tina Warner created a unique twist on the mythology of mermaids and turned them into warriors, as opposed to the typical beautiful singing beauties that lure men to their deaths or the Disney approach. The men of Eriana Kwai can no longer adequately fight the mermaids ruining their economy and homeland, so its up to the local women to become warriors and mermaid killers. I loved the overall plot and how Warner created such a well thought out storyline. The characters are diverse and authentic which is not always showcased well in young adult novels. I would highly recommend this book to fans of mermaids and fans of action thrillers. A great book thats hard to put down.

I received a free electronic copy of this novel from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

I got this book off netgalley for an honest review. The cover caught my attention and the premise sounded super intriguing. Killer mermaids and an entire crew of female sailors trained to kill them. I love stories set on ships with sailors or pirates. Not to mention a crew of badass sailors comprised entirely of women. Go girl power.

I really appreciated the setting and time period. It had the technology we have today and the island was just off the Canadian coast. Being that Im canadian, the setting was fun to read about, especially since I dont see much of it in YA books.

When Lysi the mermaid called the main character Meela by the nickname Mee it brought back alot of old memories since I use to call my best friend Mee. It made the story that much more relatable and memorable for me.

I enjoyed the flash backs from when the main character was a child. Getting to know her background made her a lovable and well rounded character. I loved seeing her developping into a strong character.

The dynamics between different personalities made the story stand out. They acted exactly how twenty 18 year old girls would if they were cooped up on a ship with no adult supervision. Especially 20 girls trained to kill who get thrown in the middle of a life or death situation. The bully Dani makes a great antagonist. Shes going insane trying to take over the ship.

This story put a unique spin on female friendship by having it be a kind of starcrossed friendship. Being from two very different worlds there was alot of miscommunication, prejudice, feeling of betrayal, family conflict, fear and doubt. There was also other female frienships on the ship that were nice to see.

The insight we got into the mermaids and their culture was really interesting.

I was hooked from the first fricking page right until the end. This unique book was fast paced, riveting and suspenseful. What a unique concept Tiana Warner has here. I'll never look at mermaids again since these ones are flesh eating! Holy S***! It was intense and frightening in the best way possible! I need the sequel now.

I couldn’t put it down! Empowered women plunge themselves into epic battles against supernatural mermaids to save their civilization from ruin. Excellent character development, detestable opponents, and enough mystery and plot twists to make it an action-packed page turner. A well written YA novel with an excellent dark fantasy backstory. Perfectly set up for a sequel.

Full disclosure: I received a free electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have since purchased the Kindle version of this book on Amazon.

I really enjoyed reading this wonderfully written book and found myself wanting more! I've not read a lot of fantasy books, so if you haven't either I'd recommend you try this one. I was almost sad that it has ended but welcomed the close of a great read! Tiana has created some strong and unique characters that pulled me into this world of deadly Mermaids - very different story line than anything else I've read! Mermaids may give you an idea of what to expect from this book but these are not the Mermaids I've learned about... Very creative and engaging book, creating a very colorful and realistic world where Humans and Mermaids clash to the death! The main characters are presented with many challenges that we can relate to in own lives and in this fantasy land - the struggles are real, emotional and difficult at times. I sure hope there's a second book in what is very possible the beginning of a great series!
