Cute story , though I feel like the problem of why she shouldn't marry him kept occurring even after you would think it solved. It also got slow for me in the middle but I really enjoyed the beginning and ending.

Meredith Burnley lives quietly on her country estate while caring for her half-sister until her uncle and aunt move in and try to force her to marry her cousin. She then flees with her sister to London to throw themselves on the mercy of her sister's estranged grandparents. Even after being set up in their own town home, her uncle and cousin try to force them back to the country. While the General (her sister's grandfather) remains aloof, his nephew, the Marquess of Silverton and his cousin Robert frequently come to their aid. It soon becomes apparent that the uncle wants Meredith's sister dead.

There was a lot that I liked about this book. The plot was good and most of the characters are excellent. Historically accurate, it is not. For one thing, no "high-stickler" like the General would allow a 24 year old and a 17 year old to set up their own home with only an old, ineffective governess as chaperone. Especially when the two of them are known to be in peril. I found that to be ludicrous. I liked the Hero. With his cool, somewhat aloof vibe he reminded me of Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy. But, unlike Mr. Darcy, he could unbend and enjoy his friends and relatives more. The heroine was fine until the hero asked her to marry him. Then the old "I'm not good enough," "He can't really love me" stuff started and I really, really hate that kind of thing. However, for a debut novel (yes, I'm an admirer of most of her newer ones), I think she did a fine job. The story is a pretty darned read.

This book started out just a little slow for me but it picked up very nicely and I enjoyed reading it. I loved Silverton and liked Meredith but I got a little tired of her whining about not being good enough and destined to spend the rest of her life alone. She really had no reason for such deep rooted feelings. Also, I wanted to see Lady Silverton get her comeuppance and not a new townhouse built for her! That was disappointing and the reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. But as always, you cannot go wrong with a Vanessa Kelly book!

Meredith Burnley's half-sister, Annabel, is an heiress and her guardians are threatening to have her locked in an asylum. Meredith goes to London to seek help from Annabel's grandparents. Despite a rocky past, Annabel's grandmother welcomes the two women into their lives.

Annabel's grandmother, Georgina, wants to sponsor both ladies for a Season, something Meredith is not comfortable with. While Annabel is an heiress, Meredith is just a common woman.

Lord Silverton is cousin to Annabel and the titled head of his family. He agrees to take the ladies under his wing, but family charity is only part of the reason. His inappropriate attraction to Meredith is a surprise to the closed off lord, but something he can't deny.

As the family spends more time together and secrets come out, Silverton and Meredith have to fight more than just society to be together - they have to fight themselves.

I really liked the characters in Mastering the Marquess. The love that grows between Silverton and Meredith actually has obvious cause, not just ephemeral chemistry, which is hard to demonstrate on paper. All the characters are well-fleshed out and each serve a purpose in the overall story. The plot is twisty and veers in unexpected directions, and keeps the reader on their toes. Overall, this is an excellent story with characters you will remember after the last page is done.

a delightful Stanton Family tale

I very much enjoyed this Stanton family story. I read the books out of order (2, 4, 3, 1) not realizing it was a series. I liked Sex and the Single Earl least. I wonder if I would like it more if I had read them in order. Trask is a noble fellow and friend to Silverton in book 1, not the high handed suitor I saw him as in book 2.

This is a story of two couples falling in love-sisters with distant cousins. They flirt, walk in the park, participate in family activities and witty repartee. There are hurdles to cross but nothing impossible.

Each book in the series tells a much different tale of the Stanton family and those close to them. They are good people.

I'd read all the books in the series and had left this one till last for some reason. Anyway I'm finally getting into by TBR folder on my Kindle. The story was surprisingly good and unlike some of the other reviewers, I quite liked the haughty H. Of course he had his really dense moments too. What cost this book a star was the h towards the end. She was irrational in not wanting to marry the H despite being intimate with him on a number of occasions, not credible for me. Anyway it was still worth reading.
