From the Back Cover

This cd is not compatible for dvd's in Canada so I don't know why you are selling this. They said I would get a refund and I still haven't received it. I would have loved to get this cd it is not available in Canada. I did see this movie on television and liked it so much I would have liked to see it again. The music in this movie was incredible. It was"mi pard'udirancora" by Enrico Caruso. I don't usually like Woody Allen's movie but this one was so enjoyable.

This movie reminds me a lot of another Woody A. movie: "Crimes and Missdemenors." Stories are very similar, in C&M doctor is having an affair with a heomen who's had enough secrecy and is demanding that he comes out and tells and leaves his wife for her. He thinks that will destroy his life and reputation as an optomologist, so he contracts professional killer who kills her. It is not a decision that he arrives easely at and is haunted by his jewish religous concies but he gets away with it. At the same time parrallel story is happining with Woody as camerman and Alan Alda as his boss in documentary about A.A.

Mach Point follows a story of former professional player turned trainer at rich London tenis club. He meets here rich english lad with whom he becomes friendly. He introduces him to his sister whom he later marries and her rich father sets him up for executive job at one of his companies, which makes a tenis player a rich man. He develops an affair with Scarlet Johanson who was originaly a fiance of rich english man whose sister he later married. He has great deal of passion for her not as nearly as much passion for his wife. Scarlet becomes pregnant and demands that he leaves his wife just like that other woman in Crimes and Missdemenors. He is not willing to leave her because of the good life his new marriage is provided him, not because of his wife so he kills Scarlets's character and he gets away with it.

Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is a former tennis pro who begins work at a London tennis club. He meets a wealthy family, befriends the son and romances the daughter. Things are looking good for Chris as he starts to move up the corporate ladder, and then he meets would-be actress Nola (Scarlett Johansson).

I knew nothing of this movie beforehand and assumed it was just a poor-boy-makes-good story; then came the last twenty minutes and I was shocked. The movie changed completely and I loved it. The Woody Allen film has been rightly compared with Hitchcock's work. Indeed, Chris is quite similar to Ray Milland's character in Dial M For Murder; both are charming, retired/washed-up tennis stars and pretty boys who marry well and aren't big on ethics. While both Meyers and Johansson underplay their parts and lack chemistry together, the story is so good that I thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie is expertly directed and has a strong British supporting cast; heartily recommended.

Matchpoint is a followup to Allen's earlier film, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and shows how his thinking has evolved. Crimes explored the question of good vs evil and whether there was a god in the universe, and seemed to answer in the negative. Matchpoint picks up where Crimes left off and posits the question: if there is no god, then what determines the good (and bad) fortune of men? His answer: chance. Or dumb, blind luck. And the central character, an erstwhile tennis pro turned wouldbe financier, is certainly lucky. Most of it is plausible, except maybe the end. Maybe I've been spoiled by CSI, but I have to believe the real-life London PD would have got their man, the errant ring notwithstanding.

A good film, but it lacks the emotional punch of Crimes. It also doesn't have any of Allen's trademark humor. For good or bad, Woody plays it straight here. I can't wait for his next comedy.
