I purchase this mattress with a cover and the Malouf bed frame from Amazon. There was some kind of sale on and I got both for under $500. I was instantly happy with the deal.
Delivery was fantastic. The UPS driver carried both frame and mattress to my apartment in good condition. On opening the mattress I immediately noted the unpleasant smell that was expected. However, it seemed to dissipate in the next 2 - 3 days.
At first, I really loved the mattress. It was firm and had a bounce. I start sleeping on my back and the firmness did wonders for me. But soon it was summer and the first signs of hate appeared in my relationship with this mattress. Having read something about memory foam mattresses since then, I would advise anyone looking into them to consider the temperature they enjoy sleeping at. Memory foam acts an an insulator and traps your body heat. Despite using the Malouf frame which exposes a lot of the underside of the mattress, my mattress heated up severely. This will happen even with more expensive mattresses unless they use special technologies to decrease the heat holding property of the foam. Most people will need an air-conditioned room to be comfortable in the summer. In the winter it's a blessing.
As time went by, I also noticed the mattress sagging in certain areas. At first the sagging disappeared a little while after waking up but soon it became permanent, though not enough to claim the warranty. Once the sagging became more noticeable, I started having back pains, shoulder pain and sciatica pains. I tried to resolve the problem by rotating the mattress and for a while it helped. Sometimes I just change my head position.Read more ›
What everyone says is true: after unpacking, you need several days for the scent to start dissipating. I'm usually sensitive to odours or chemicals, and this didn't give me a headache or make me feel sick, but definitely was noticeable. The frame is very stable and provides a tonne of under-bed storage which is really handy in a small bedroom like ours.
I found the mattress firm but still soft enough, but to please my BF who likes a softer mattress, we added an Obus-Forme topper from Sears. It's a really nice balance between firm and soft, no aches and pains, and my BF can now (mostly) sleep through the night. Compared to the prices on even entry level mattresses from conventional furniture shops, this has been a really pleasant alternative.
My only complaint, aside from the smell, is that it is warmer than the cotton mattress that I am used to. I found that in the summer (we've used it for about 5 months now), I needed to sleep without sheets and even with AC, I felt warm. If you're sensitive to heat or prefer a cooler bed, you might need something different or a special topper. My BF didn't notice any difference in terms of the heat.
Also, if you are heavier, this mattress and frame are more than adequate for support. No creaking!
I've had this mattress for a few months now and while I can't say it's the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on, it did get rid of the back pain I had from my old worn-out spring mattress. It's a lot harder than I was expecting, but I sleep on my side, which means my weight isn't spread out as well as someone who sleeps on their back.
Q: If I needed to buy another mattress, would I buy this again?
A: At the moment, it's hard to say. A mattress is only "cheap" if you can get as much life out of it as a higher priced mattress. I had my old spring mattress for nearly 7 years and it cost me around $600, so if this one lasts at least half as long, I'll consider it a good investment and buy another.
EDIT: July 6, 2016
This mattress really does not last long at all. After about a year and a half, it has lost most of it's support and I dread sleeping in it every night. Every morning now I wake up with a sore back, practically leaping out of bed so I don't have to spend a minute longer in this torture device. Keeping in mind that I'm only one man, weighing about 150lbs, it has really worn down quickly.
Don't buy this mattress. It's a waste of money, you'll have much better luck waiting for a sale and buying a nice, quality spring mattress for a similar price.
