I cannot say enough about this inviting -- and revealing -- remarkable, little book. Rosemary O'Toole, CSJ, has republished -- in a simple, easy-to-read format -- the original 128 Maxims (Wisdom Sayings) of Fr. Jean-Pierre Medaille (1610-1669). The book is a gold mine of inspiration and enlightenment .... a powerful collection of mystical beauty and divine revelation that draws the reader into that sacred inner space that, we know -- once we rest in the wondrous encounter -- ... connects us to God.
From the book's Introduction ....
"The Maxims of Perfection have a hidden quality, a mystical dimension. We must go beyond the words and enter into the heart of the mystery which no language can ever fully convey. This presentation style [... of maxims] lures us to touch our own mystical depths ... and rest there in silent pondering, lifted into a transcendence beyond any particular culture, age or race. They are timeless."
As a daily devotion, I try to find time every day to read, ponder and explore the deep life-wisdom carried in each of Medaille's Maxims. As Sr. Rosemary spells out so clearly: "Dialogue with this mystic, listen to our beloved Jean-Pierre speak with you. Read slowly his inspired wisdom sayings and let one phrase, one word ... please you, attract you, challenge you, invite you, and move you into the 'something more.' Come into the presence of Love and let Love love through you."
