Product Description

Review

"Regardless of religious beliefs or life situations, any reader would benefit from the Mindfulness-Based Stillness Meditation (MBSM) techniques clearly outlined here. There are many user-friendly books that teach basic meditation, but this edition is particularly unique in its authors’ life stories and expertise in the mind-body connection. Bedson spent time in India learning from masters at a Tibetan monastery, and Gawler, diagnosed with swiftly fatal osteogenic sarcoma at the age of 24, overcame his painful disease through meditation and lifestyle change and has remained cancer-free since 1978."
--Kirkus Review

Praise for YOU CAN CONQUER CANCER:

"An exceptional man with an exceptional story about recovering and healing. This is not only about cancer but about your life and choices."
--Dr. Bernie Siegel, author of Love, Medicine and Miracles

"A wonderfully practical, inspiring guide both for preventing and healing cancer."
--Dr. Joan Borysenko, author of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind

"There is hope for people with life-threatening cancer, and this book is where to find it."
--George Jelinek, Professor of Emergency Medicine, University of Western Australia

HASH(0x9da58c24) out of 5 stars Excellent overview on meditation Sept. 12 2011
By Lightlover - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book provides a clear, concise and extremely well explained overview of mindfulness meditation for every day use as well as for in-depth healing. The authors approach this subject with intelligence and a great deal of compassion. The piece de resistance is the stillness meditation and the very clear instructions on how to do that particular meditation. I will be using it extensively. Thank you Ian Gawler and Paul Bedson.

HASH(0x9da58c3c) out of 5 stars Life-changing. March 25 2013

I discovered this book just about a year ago at a time in my life in which I was in crisis, and I am very glad I did. This is jam-packed with pretty much everything that a meditation student of any level could want; from very carefully written step-by-step guides to learning how to meditate to plenty of examples of how the various components of meditation could help different people to a lot of discussion of the difficulties of living in today's world and how meditation can liberate one from the constant impact of stress. I am eternally grateful to the authors, Ian Gawler and Paul Bedson. This book is the greatest gift that you can give yourself or anyone else.

This book is teaching me how to create my own oasis. The world is changing, but meditation is the only constant that we can do for ourselves, necessary as well. Although I am Christian by choice, I learn from everyone. In fact, the Christian teachings of this century has a lots of gaps. This book fills a large chasm. If I did not have my faith, I would depend on this book 100%.
HASH(0x9da58e70) out of 5 stars First rate resource Nov. 8 2012

Definitely one of the best books on meditation. There are so many and lots of them make meditation seem less accessible. This book is an excellent book for people who use meditation for healing. Anyone with cancer should get it and it's also great for anyone seeking to center themselves.
HASH(0x9dc60854) out of 5 stars Outstanding approach to the practice of meditation. June 25 2016

For my readers who want a down to earth and practical approach to Meditation, you have come to the right place. Meditation: An In-Depth Guide is just such a book. From the first page I have been impressed by the clarity and insight of our authors, Ian Gawler and Paul Bedson. Let me give a few examples of insights and suggestions from Gawler and Bedson that might help readers of this review decide if they want to buy the book.

Gawler and Bedson’s practice is called Mindfulness Based Stillness Meditation. They train us with four steps that are carefully illustrated in their text.

The first step is Preparation, which has to do with the practical details of meditation, i.e. where we sit, our posture, etc. The second step is Relaxation, how we learn to relax our mind and body. The third step is Mindfulness; that is, learning to pay attention to what is going on now, in this present moment. The fourth and last step is Stillness. Learning how to quiet the ever present conversation we have with ourselves and instead rest in our being in the moment will be a challenge for many of us, myself included.

Why meditate? My guess is that my readers have already answered this question; but to reinforce what you already know, the benefits to our health and well-being that come from a meditative practice are well-documented. And as Gawler and Bedson point out, research continues at prestigious universities around the world. I stopped searching for articles after I had found twenty-five pages of support for the value of mediation on the Internet.

Most people know that we Americans are an anxious and highly stressed people. Sadly, too much unhealthy stress makes people ill. I found statistics on the Internet that tell me that more than 80% of the ill health we experience is stress related. Mediation helps reduce stress; that fact is well documented.

Let’s cut to the chase, for that is exactly what Gawler and Bedson do in their book. On pages 42 and 43 our authors introduce us to the “Direct Approach to Meditation.” They call this approach “Just Sitting” and it involves nothing more complicated than sitting quietly in a comfortable chair and being in the moment, free to be our-self. At the end of Hermann Hesse’s famous book Siddhartha, this is just what Siddhartha does. He quietly sits down and listens to the river that flows by him, allowing the river to teach him lessons that are beyond words.

Gawler and Bedson tell us that we never need to do more than take the direct approach to meditation, but for those who want a guided practice, the rest of their book is for them. I would give their book more than five stars if Amazon allowed it. I think anyone who buys this book will be pleased with this outstanding approach to the practice of meditation.
