This wooden set features a wooden knife and seven pieces of sliceable fruit that can be cut into a total of 17 pieces. Food makes a realistic "CRUNCH" sound when sliced. With so many pieces, it's also a great way to introduce the concepts of part, whole and fractions!
From the manufacturer
Satisfying Slicing Sounds
Ideally suited for stocking a play kitchen or shopping cart, this cutting fruit set combines hands-on fun and unique learning with creative play. The seven included fruits (pear, orange, melon, kiwi, strawberry, banana, and lemon) can be cut up into 17 hand-painted wooden pieces using the included wooden knife, then neatly tucked away in the sturdy storage crate. Kids can’t resist the realistic crunch sound when the fruit is sliced!
A Delicious Way to Learn
In addition to teaching fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, this set encourages imaginative and independent play -- and even introduces the concept of fractions. A child can use the wooden knife to cut up the fruit and count all the pieces, then you can talk together about cutting the pear, orange, strawberry, lemon, and kiwi in half; the banana in thirds; and the melon in fourths.

The product is wood. Great to know because it is solid wood. The paint on the fruits arrived looking chipped in quite a few areas. The knife had to be smoothed out as I noticed unfinished areas with bits of tiny splinters. Within a few minutes of my little one playing with it, we started noticing dents all over the fruit. She loves "cutting" her own fruit and she caught on very quickly. My daughter is only 1.5 months now, so I don't want to take away something that really encourages her to use her motor skills. It is a good product and I purchased it on sale for $18 and change but if I had known what I was getting, I would have purchased the Hape set instead. I was expecting more from Melissa and Doug. I spend a lot of money on Melissa and Doug products, so I know they are unique in their approach to making quality educational and imaginative play toys, but this should have been a pass for me. Maybe I just happened to get a dud but next time I order Melissa and Doug online, I will make sure to examine yhe produvt before showing it to my little one.
In addition, the velcro of the pear are two scratchy sides so they do not hold together.
My 15 month old LOVES his toy b
